From KB900325:

Note To install this update, you must have Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 and
.NET Framework 1.1 SP1 installed. Windows Update detects whether these
packages are installed. Windows Update automatically installs these packages
for you.

If the 886904 update is installed, you must uninstall the 886904 update
before you install Update Rollup 2 for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center
Edition 2005. Otherwise, the .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 installation will not
succeed.

To determine whether the 886904 update is installed, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
2. Click to select the Show Updates check box.
3. In the Currently installed programs list, look for the following
item:
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886904)

If this item appears, you must remove the hotfix. To remove the hotfix,
click Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886904), and then click Remove.
Then, visit the Windows Update Web sit to download and install Update Rollup
2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

I keep getting this problem too. I have already found and followed this
advice to no avail. My system had KB886903 hotfix installed... which somehow
appears to be the same thing. Removed it. Rollup 2 still fails. :-(

Like Andrew I am unable to install the update even after removing
hotfixes and all the .NET versions suggested by other group members.
Really frustrating. :-(

What worked for me was uninstalling KB904706, but I tried several others that
didn't work.

you don't tell anybody what to do about 886903 what do you do if you have
this and not 886904. I don't have service pack 1 and update does not tell me
what to do

886903 is the MS05-004 update for .NET 1.1 with SP1
886904 is the MS05-004 update for .NET 1.1 without SP1.

Your statement that you have 886903 but not SP1 appears to be inconsistent.

Are you actually having any problems or was this just an enquiry?

Thanks you LauraJ! I had already tried system restore and have been grinding
my teeth at the prospect of starting yet again with a fresh installation of
MCE; but your solution made rollup 2 install perfectly.

This was also the correct solution for me. I removed the KB904706 update via
the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel (after checking to Show Updates).
rebooted and did the Windows Update again. I had KB886903 installed installed
but not KB886904.

After updated, I was then able to reinstall the KB904706 update as well as
other MCE updates that followed the rollup.

Thanks, again!

I removed KB904706 and KB912812 (someone's suggestion in another discussion
group) in an attempt to be able to successfully install update rollup 2. Now
Internet explorer will not work at all - I get a warning pop-up that says,
"The procedure entry point InternetGetSecurityInfoByURLW could not be located
in the dynamic link library WININET.dll"

Can anyone help me get Explorer back up and running? Once that happens I
will worry about getting the media center update rollup 2.

Thanks.

At a rough guess, you need to uninstall IE 7 beta.

Thanks. That worked well. Now I will try for the update rollup 2 for media
center xp 2005.

You need to uninstall IE beta 3 by simply going to "add/remove programs" in
your control panel and removing IE. It looks like you're removing IE entirely
but it actually only removes the Beta 3 part of it and then you should be
able to open IE. That worked for me.

Sorry, I don't think I made myself very clear. My Internet Explorer was
fine, I'm having the problem stated the first post - 0x634. I just wanted to
know what all updates I need to uninstall to get Rollup 2 to install.

Remove Windows Media Player version 11 (you'll roll back to version 10), then
you should be able to install rollup 2. I did not have to do anything else
(from what I remember).

Hope that helps.

I had this problem, and I tried the "remove this KB and that KB" approach
with no luck. So I downloaded the full "Update Rollup 2" installer
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e5daf37e-e243-4410-bc51-81cf2b56fe6e) and gave that a go. It failed, too.

BUT... I was then able to go through the "MCSetup.log" file it created, and
I discovered that it was actually the KB895572 package which was spitting out
the 0x643 error code. And when I looked at the "KB895572.log", I found the
reason - which makes absolutely no sense, of course:

KB895572 is an update for Window Media Player 10, and if you attempt to
install it silently onto a system where Media Player *11* is installed, it
fails with an error code, which is then mapped to the 0x643 error code I've
come to love SOOO much. Basically, the error is something along the lines of
"This update is for Media Player 10. It will fail if the files it includes
are already installed".

Brain dead. The *correct* behavior, IMGHO, would be for it to return a
SUCCESS code if the files are already up to date, and NOT a failure code!

Anyway, the solution for me was quite simple: Uninstall Media Player 11,
install the Update Rollup 2, and then reinstall Media Player 11.

Problem solved.

for all those out there who are having this problem. rolling back windows media player from 11 to 10 works like a charm. once you've rolled it back. try the update kb 900325 again and see if that doesn't do the trick. after installing the update then reinstall media player 11 and its good to go . done deal . i know because that's what i did to resolve my issue
