NOT INSTALLING?
I DON'T WANT A WORK AROUND..........I JUST WANT IT TO INSTALL.

MANY HOME USERS, USE APPLICATIONS BASED OFF THE .NET FRAMEWORK 2.0 AND NOW
MICROSOFT IS CAUSING PROBLEMS FOR THEM. HOME USERS DO NOT WANT TO UNINSTALL
AND THEN REINSTALL, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE. IT IS A PAIN.

JUST ADMIT YOUR MISTAKE AND FIX IT!!!!
THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH AN APOLOGY AND PROVIDING A FIX. JUST FIX IT
MICROSOFT FIX IT!

On the WU Website, select your history of updates - now click on failed
update (red mark) and see if there is an error code.
If there is an error code, write it down and post back or in the
alternative, do a search for the error code.

It may be a pain for you, but that (and use of the clean-up utility) is the
only sort of fix that is known in this newsgroup.

The problem is not exclusively with the Microsoft update: it has installed
without problem on all the PCs that I look after, and I imagine that the
same is true of many millions of other users worldwide. Whatever is causing
this update to fail on your PC is not unrelated to the state of your PC, and
its history of .NET installation and updates. So the only known remedy is
for you to regularize the state of your PC by performing a clean-up and
reinstallation of the affected software.

Exact procedure I had to do was this.
Uninstall Microsoft .Net Frame 2 from your system
Run cleanup_tool.exe
(http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools/dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip)
Reboot computer
Install Microsoft .Net Frame 2 (download first and install from computer)
Install KB917283-X86 patch (download first and install from computer)
Reboot computer

I downloaded everything to my computer and put it in a folder first.

My guess is that not everyone has to run the cleanup tool but it should
guarantee a smooth implementation of the patch. I had 1-xp machine that had
no issues at all. I had another xp machine that required only the
reinstallation of .net Frame 2. My 3rd xp machine and w2k machine required
the cleanup tool to be used. I recommend you do it all.

Be nice, stop shouting, and take your medicine.
The fix has been posted numerous times. If you can't scan the headers first...

What we have ran into (alot) in a number of gaming communities is
the .NET 2.0 was not the MS FEB06 release on their PC's. I have seen issues
(corrupted .NET) from reinstalling/overwriting .NET framework; including VGA
Card install discs and a couple outdated download sites (not MS). For
whatever reason... MS seemingly has not caught it through automatic updates.
To correct the situation is to completely uninstall v2.0 and reinstall it.
KB917283 apparently needs to the FEB06 .NET update to install.

Robin Walker updated my previous posting here:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?query=KB917283&dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&cat=en_US_2231886c-4c59-45b0-92e0-8881ddf5f40b&lang=en&cr=US&pt=1fb9885a-6840-48df-b845-31a5188de97a&catlist=18269d9b-486b-46eb-b15e-0796666fe81a&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us

We had a couple people that had a few registry issues also. So I will call
this...

Step3b: You might run the Free Full Service Scan to clean up the registry
before reinstalling .NET 2.0... http://safety.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

The Windows Live Safety Center "is a new, free service designed to help
ensure the health of your PC." It has a registry cleaner.

Please do NOT use the Live Safety Center registry scan - it damages your
registry so that you cannot install Office updates.
