This is getting VERY FRUSTRATING...

I received auto-update notification of two new critical updates for Windows
Server 2003:

Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB918419)
Security Update for Office 2003 (KB917151)

Attempts at allowing the update to run abended with the error message:

"Error 1101, Error reading from file: c:\windows\installer\MSIA3.tmp.
Verify that the file exists and that you can access it."

I checked the hidden directory and verified that the MSIA3.tmp file does in
fact exist... although the file size is zero bytes and seems to not have
been updated recently. I deleted the file but that did not change the
condition.

Rather than use autoupdate, I downloaded the update files
office2003-KB918419-FullFile-ENU.exe and
office2003-KB917151-FullFile-ENU.exe directly from Microsoft and attempted
to run them manually. The results were "the update cannot be applied."

I noticed another user in the group having a similar problem and the
recommendation was to use the "detect and repair" feature in Office. I did
so.

After Office showed the "detect and repair" operation successfully
completed, I attempted the update and again they both failed.... and seconds
later the "Updates are ready for your computer" popup reappeared.

Finally, I checked to see if I had that windows live registry thingie and I
do not.

Out of ideas -- would appreciate a few. Thanks in advance!

If you have not already done so, please ensure that any third-party
anti-virus, anti-malware (e.g. SpySweeper), firewall, or download
accelerator is disabled before attempting these updates again. If you
disable a firewall, re-enable Windows Firewall for the duration.

I disabled my AV software (NOD32) and re-tried the autoupdate (which only
asked to install KB918419 this time) and the install was successful.

Interestingly, attempt at manually installing KB917151 (which disappeared
from the autoupdate list) failed...

Anyway, the Excel update worked... and now I can re-start my AV and
exhale...

Thanks!
