I am having trouble with Office 2003 updates failing. There is one other
report of a similar problem in August 2005 but no response or corrective
action is provided. The failure gives the cryptic error code 0x080070643.
The error code has shown up for a Windows Defender problem... But, the
solution provided there offers to remove unspecified software from the
computer... Not a safe approach.

Hello again:
I merely uninstalled my Excel 2003 viewer, reinstalled it and then the
updates worked. The free Excel 2003 viewer download can be found on a Google
search.

I was finally able to install microsoft security scan after receiving
Error Code: 0x80070643 numerous times. I tried several things so here is
what I did. Uninstall any previous antivirus, make sure Automatics
updates is on, installed windows update Windows Installer KB893803
Hope this works for you as well
