Windows Update Won't Update (Green Bar Keeps Scrolling)

The green scroll bar just keeps scrolling and scrolling and scrolling.
Nothing's happening! I've even left it for hours a few times!

My last update was in Jun 2007! I had to download service pack 3 'manually'!
I've had no probs updating Office though!

What's going on?

If no updates have installed (via Windows Update or Automatic Updates) since
January 2007, backup your personal data, then do a format & clean install of
Windows. Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT
fix this!

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a network and before using a USB key that
isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted:

Paula ... since the system has not been updated for almost 2 years
there's a *strong* likelihood that it's now infected and OWNED by
someone other then yourself.
You should NEVER do ANY financial transactions from it nor be storing
any sensitive personal information [ie: SSN numbers/passwords for
banking/financial sites, etc] on it.

At the present time, the green scroll bar issue is the *least* of your
concerns.

What is the installed antivirus/security suite and has it been kept up
to date in regards to virus definitions ?
When was the last time the system was scanned for malware ?
Which firewall is being used ?

Using Internet Explorer, strongly suggest you see if the OS can be
scanned here: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

From your post one can deduce that this is XP and the SP you refer to
is XP SP3, correct ?
Providing that info straight off helps out those who want to help *you*.

Same problem here. I run Zonealarm Pro AW & Firewall.
Been kept up to date updatewise and last months updates loaded fine.
Since then green scrolling bar and I have to kill off the window to make it
go away.

The green bar continually scrolling shows that there's either a
scripting issue, an XML issue, or a communication issue with the update
site.
See if there's an update to ZA as it's most likely the cause.

"Zonealarm Antivirus" then if we are into nitpicking. Has antivirus
and firewall.
Kept updated and runs ultradeep scans every day. Shutting it off and
running Update
doesn't help.

Maybe time to reinstall XP.

Yes it's XP SP3.

I've been virus and spyware checking the computer every week with NOD32 (?)
and Spysweeper. I'm beginning to wonder if the stop of windows update
coincides with the installation of Spysweeper...

So I have to format the computer? Bugger. It's gonna be a pain. I'll have to
work something out...

Now that's an *entirely* different situation than what you first posted,
Paula.

I'll assume that SP2 was installed prior to the installation of SP3.
Which means that all Security updates released prior to SP3 being
published are installed. So, the system has been kept updated up until
that point in time.

Let's try this. Click Start > then Run > in the Open: field type the
below in or copy&paste it, then click OK or press Enter

regsvr32 msxml3.dll

If you type it, please note the space between the "2" and the "m". And,
that's an L (l) not a one before the 3.
What message do you get ?

If it stated " Dll registration successful " or similar verbiage, then
do another attempt at updating at Windows Update.
If a different message appeared, please post exactly what it was.

If the system still can not update, please post the *last* 50 or so
lines of the WindowsUpdate.log in your next reply.

It's says DllRegisterServer in msxml3.dll succeeded.

It says that for all the 'dll's' I've tried (from other similar threads).

The log isn't showing any errors and it's also showing the system is
attempting to update via Microsoft Update, not Windows Update.
Have you attempted to reregister the ActiveX component that's needed to
access MS Update, muweb.dll ?
Try that and jscript.dll, too, please.

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 muweb.dll

Try to update once more. If the green bar issue still occurs, reopen the
WindowsUpdate.log. Scroll all the way to the bottom.
Now work your way up in the log until you find WARNING or FATAL entries.
Please post the *most recent* sections containing those entries and the
entry just prior and just after such entries.

If updating failures started when Spysweeper was installed, that's a
very reasonable conclusion, Paula. Does the WindowsUpdate.log go back to
that time ?

I've re-registered the ActiveX numerous times with no probs (alternating
between microsoft and windows updates). Still having the same prob in both.
I've also tried to update the windowsupdateagent numerous times but it keeps
saying that I've already go the current version.

Unfortunately the WindowsUpdate.log doesn't go as far back as the spysweeper
installation (I've updated spysweeper just incase as well). WindowsUpdate.log
only goes as far back as the beginning of the year. I've find another log
though, Windows Update.log which lasts only a week in Aug 2004!

Anyway, my WindowsUpdate.log faults and warnings are below (I apologise if
I've copy and pasted the same thing twice! I searched for 'warning' and
'fatal' separately. The errors seem very similar as well and I still can't
sort the damn thing out. Another thing I've noticed, I've left the update on
for nearly 3 hours now but the log only logs the first 39 minutes. Is this
normal?):

If this isn't something simple to fix then I might as well format the whole

I've tried both safe mode and normal mode. Safe mode doesn't work, as I found
out from reading other threads! Opps!

Ignore the KB's title and do the steps listed under

If no joy ... where are you located ? The WU.log shows

which translates to Greenwich Means Time plus 1 hour.
If you are located in the US then the time is way off.

If the time and date of the system is correct, were all of the DST
change updates installed ?

The release of the Windows Update Agent is the latest one, Paula.
As a final step you could run this tool with the system connected to the
net to

> - Clear out the BITS queue
> - Register dependent DLLs
> - Clean up the SoftwareDistribution download folder
> - Rename the CATROOT2 folder under system32
> - Winsock Catalog Reset
> - Reset service permissions

Ensure the native XP firewall is enabled prior to running

I'm such a problem child! The time is correct. I've based in the UK.

Anyway, I've managed to do a 'clean boot' of the system but it won't
complete the ResetWindowsUpdate.msi. It's having problems with the BIT (says
stopping but not actually stopped. I've disabled the internet as well).

I might just format the whole drive. This whole thing bl**dy annoying.
Other-half can get his own laptop/ computer this time (who knows what he's
downloaded with all his online gaming and poker (which hasn't been caught by
the anti-virus/ spysware software))!

Oh, oh. There's no telling what he's downloaded but ... when there are
issues with the services associated with updating, then that's almost a
sure sign that some 'critter' is at play.

At the very least, run this tool and see what it detects prior to
formatting, Paula: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Click the 'Download free version" button in the left frame.
Next, read the 'Usage' paragraph.
After updating it, suggest you do a "Quick scan" as MBAM is set to that
by it's Default setting .

Please post back and let us know what it detects.

I have the same problem. The scrollbar keeps scrolling but no updates come
in. Sometimes I get a error message that Windows Explorer doesn't work
because of a not installed Update. Who can help.

Please start your own thread and include this information:

1) The edition of Windows installed and the Service Pack level [SP2/SP3/etc]
2) The installed security software [antivirus/security
suite/anti-malware software] and if a 3rd party firewall is being used
3) The names of the toolbars installed to Internet Explorer
