You get this error when the "scan for updates" is
unsuccessful

Does anyone else have a solution please besides the ones
listed on Windows Update Troubleshooter (see below).I
don't have internet acceleration software and I have tried
solutions 2,3,4. Do not have MSN Messenger so solution 5
not applicable.

Also, note at bottom of info says this problem applies to
XP and 2000. I am running Win Me!

Thanks everyone

Andrew Griffiths

From Windows UPdate Troubleshooter
-------------------------------------
Problem Description:
The error 0x800A138F is displayed when scanning for
updates, but the Windows Update.log file will show error
0x800C0008.

Resolutions:
This is a generic error number which indicates a problem
with the SSL connection with our server.

Some customers have resolved this issue by disabling or
uninstalling internet acceleration software.
-----------------------------------------------------------
---------------------
Suggestion 2
============
The error may occur because the language-setting in
Internet Explorer is missing. To add a language, in
Internet Explorer, select Tools-->Internet Options, and
click the "Languages" button. Add a language to the list
if empty.
-----------------------------------------------------------
---------------------
Suggestion 3
============
Check the system time. SSL will not function if the
system time is more than 100 days off.
-----------------------------------------------------------
---------------------
Suggestion 4
============
Please uncheck "Check for server certificate revocation":

1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click on Tools
3. Click on Internet Option from the drop down menu
4. Click on the Advanced tab
5. Scroll down to the Security Section
6. Unselect "Check for server certificate revocation"
7. Reboot the machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
---------------------
Suggestion 5
============
One customer performed an MSN Messenger update, which
fixed his 0x800c0008 Windows Update issue as well.
Correlation not yet determined but an avenue to check if
you have MSN Messenger installed.
-----------------------------------------------------------
---------------------

Issue Applies To:
Windows 2000
Windows XP

Hi Michael,
One of the solutions is to search and find if you have a Hosts file and
if so search within it for the entry a248.e.akamai.net and delete it. Should
you have Spyblocker installed you can also achieve the same by going to
'Setup/Find/a248.e.akamai.net/Unblock checked/Save/OK'. The reason for doing
this is that the a248.e.akamai.net address is now part of the Windows Update
URL but in many Hosts files and in Spyblocker it is regarded as a banned
site and is consequently blocked.
Good luck,
Reg

Found it.

Yes.

I'm very sorry for coming back so late but it took some time... ;)

First, I tried this on the WU Troubleshooting:
"Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot supply the requested
page; Cannot Display Page (Windows XP)"

Got in WU, installed some updates but got also a lot the famous error
0x800A138F / 0x800C0008 again... And it appeared that the registry setting
(CSDVersion) from the solution above changed back to his original state...
Changed it again (and reboot!) and working like a charm. :) (Later on, I
found out that re-installing SP1 changes the setting back.) And, for the
record, I DO NOT recall removing SP1...

But then, sometimes, I got the message that the servers of WU are
temporarily unavailable.

So, I tried:
"When attempting to access the Windows Update site you receive the following
message: The site is temporarily unavailable"

And I could update again! Only one at the time and skipping SP1 (which is
miraculously appearing again and again) and skipping some other updates
which gave a crash of WU but it's a start. I even tried "Q319109 - WU Site
Lists Updates That You Already Installed" but it doesn't help.

BUT, after all these updates and after keeping trying to connect and update
and trying to install the difficult updates directly (not from WU but from
the article about it) I finally got the message: You are ready - Nothing to
install.

Finally.

Thanks anyway for all the people who took the effort to help me. I will post
this in the hope to help others.

C-Ya,
Mike

Anyone who needs some more info, ask the question. I will try to answer. And
after some days, try to mail me (remove ...).

Hi Reg,

I recently added a new Hosts file to block more
advertisement, never thinking that one of the addresses
would block my Microsoft update; however, you are correct.

I commented out the address and everything worked fine.
Thank you very much :).

Hi Rich,
Thanks for letting me know. There is a number of causes to this same
problem, glad the one I suggested worked for you. If you take a look at your
Windows Update.log you will see there the a248.e.akamai.net in the Microsoft
address.
Regards
Reg
