I was running Windows Update and it hung (for several hours). Since then,
when I shut down my computer, it wants to install updates. If I let it, it
never seems to actually do anything. If I try to run Window Update, it just
hangs.

In looking at my update history, I can see that the last four updates (all
on the same day) failed. The first one had error code 0x80200010. The
others have error code 0x80246005.

Following some instructions/suggestions here, I did the following (stated
briefly):
1) stopped wuauserv
2) moved files in C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution\Download to another
directory (instead of deleting them)
3) started wuauserv
4) ran disk cleanup.

Looking at WindowsUpdate.log, a few days before downloading those updates,
there was a syncupdate failure 0x8024400D, soap client error 7, soap error
code 300.

The following day, I have "WU client failed searching for update with error
0x8024001b.

The day shown for my failed updates shows "DnldMgr BITS job ... hit a
transient error, updateID = ... , error 0x80200010.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Art S

Art,

For error 0x80246005
1) stop wuauserv
2) delete C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution\** DataStore <--- this folder
3) start wuauserv

In fact, all of the errors could well be from an "ill" Software
Distribution folder and it's subfolders.
Right click it, choose Properties, and post back with how big it is, please.

The size is 8.51MB, with size on disk also being 8.51 MG (6 files, 1 folders).

That appears to have resolved the problem. Thanks,

I noticed that the four updates that had error codes weren't uploaded
when Windows Update ran and they aren't listed in Add or remove programs.
Do I need to upload them manually or, given that Windows Update didn't
download them, are they covered by later updates?

You're welcome, Art. Remind me which 4 updates and we'll provide you
direct download links for them.

Those are Office updates. Go to the linked page and choose the proper
update for the version of Office that is installed :

KB905754, KB905755, KB905649:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-012.mspx

In regards to KB904018, read this first :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/904018

The link to download it is towards the bottom of the page.
None of those updates came from Windows Update, rather, they came from
Microsoft Update. If one opts in to MU then Aumtomatic Updates will
include Office ones.
Apparently the installation issue came from mismatched software controls.

Personally, I'd only use Microsoft Update in the " Notify me but don't
automatically download or install .. " mode. Make a note of what the
updates are and then either obtain them from the links in the Security
Bulletins or visit the Office Update page :
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/default.aspx

Download what's needed, save them, and when ALL Office apps and programs
are CLOSED, then install them.

That, I do.

That, I will start doing.

Thanks again.

MowGreen,

Can you please let me know how to stop wuauserv? I don't have much idea
about these, and I am facing the same problem. Any help from you is very much
appreciated.

Thanks,
Dany.
