Running XP. All of a sudden get above error when try to update. Get
following message when start updates..............................

Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue:

o Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
o Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

I click continue and download followed by 100% register ensues. I then get
error 0x8024d007 with following commentary...........

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you
are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the
problem. ................etc

1. I've tried to register the windows update files as described in
Article ID: 956701 but no joy here

2 I've obtained and tried to install latest windows update agent as
described in Article ID: 949104 but this "fails" as it says it's already
installed and therefore not needed !!

3. I've downloaded and re-installed a new copy IE8 but still get
error report.

Appreciate being pointed in right direction to cure this problem.

Unfortunately with no replies, not been able to find a specific solution to
my problem. Fortunately I clone my HDD after every patch Tuesday so, having
backed up my Mail account, I reverted to cloned copy, imported mail, updated
and re-cloned. Update functionality working on both Drives.

Could you tell me how you clone your HDD? I use Acronis True Image but
I've never used a cloned drive as a backup. I'm just curious what you
use since it appears to work for you. Thanks!

Did you read his original question?

He says:

"1. I've tried to register the windows update files as described in
Article ID: 956701 but no joy here"

Yes I did. I gave him the fix with the MS KB Link. Maybe JD you should really
understand the root issue of his WU issue. The OP is running XP and the answer he
posted as you also posted to me , means he did not follow the steps. He probably did
try to register the dll's but he either did not do it as per the instructions(1st
notepad) or he did not leave a space between the dll and /s which is the scenario
with 99% of people that fail to fix this exact same issue.

I guess we'll never know since he restored using a cloned drive. I've
added the kb article and your notes to my notes should I ever see the
update error on my computer.

Peter Foldes/JD,

Sorry for delay in reply. As indicated, I'd reverted to a cloned copy on
another HDD. However the problem has now reappeared and rather than revert
to yet another (updated) cloned HDD, I like to find out what is causing this
problem.

I don't like back biting in forums. It's not helpful. I must correct your
assumption and side with JD. Yes you gave me the MS KB Link but I had
already been there, done it and got the tee shirt. I did follow the steps
and performed everything as per instructions as my original report
intimated. Believe it or not, I can follow instructions.

If the fix from MS KB didn't work then you need to do a little more
research? I did a little looking around and found this link:

http://forums.techarena.in/windows-update/413537.htm

Since you say you reverted to a cloned copy and that fixed the problem
for a while, it sounds like a Windows update may be causing the problem?

Sorry I can't help more.

Forums and Newsgroups have what you call "back biting." It's not
helpful, it's not pretty but it's just one aspect of a newsgroup
discussion. A few well placed newsgroup filters helps! 8-)
