I've been hoping for an authoritative response from a MS
representative to my previous posts, to no avail. I do see,
however, that "Lucy[MS]" answers many posts, never quoting
the messages to which the reply is posted. I can't find
previous messages in this newsgroup with the same subject
line as the subject of replies from "Lucy[MS]", so I
conclude they were posted somewhere else, if they really
do exist.

Answers without the questions do not help anyone, except
perhaps the original poster. And, how does that poster get
a reply if the original message isn't on this newsgroup?

Are the "replies" from "Lucy[MS]" real, or just something
put out there to make us think MS is doing something?

Windows Update is still calling for 823980 on my three
XP Pro machines, all of which have installed that patch.
Removing the registry entry and reinstalling 823980 does
not fix the problem. I still await an answer from MS on
this issue.

Jay --

Microsoft is aware of this particular issue and is
investigating the root cause. Not all computers
are experiencing this same problem with Windows
Update suggesting to install the patch again.

Thank you. Where did you find that information?

I had the same problem, and despite removing the Reg entry as stated it
still kept calling for this patch to be installed, 8 times.
BUT I lifted this registry entry from my other PC that doesn't have this
problem and it is sorted.
You could check to see if you have this entry:-

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\KB82
3980]
"DisplayName"="Windows XP Hotfix - KB823980"
"UninstallString"="C:\\WINDOWS\\$NtUninstallKB823980$\\spuninst\\spuninst.ex
e"
"TSAware"=dword:00000001
"NoModify"=dword:00000001
"Publisher"="Microsoft Corporation"
"NoRepair"=dword:00000001
"HelpLink"="http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=823980"
"DisplayVersion"="20030705.121219"

No, I don't have that entry on the three machines here in question.
However, I checked another computer that isn't calling for the
update, and the entry you mention is present. It appears that the
installation process does not always write that entry, and
apparently it is the lack of that entry that triggers the need for
the update. I decline to enter the registry keys manually.
Thanks for the reply, hopefully (if someone is listening at MS) it
will assist MS in getting a fix out to us.
