Wonderful! Now I can't even run updates!
Any ideas on what I need to do to make my updates work again?

Glad that there is someone else having this problem. I have disabled certain
services via the BlackViper website (Google the name) that are classified as
"Safe" *and*, I might add, I have had these services modified for at least
two years with no problem performing M$ updates. The unfortunate thing is
that the new update process is not an option. I was hoping that I could
restore my system from a mirror that I have and elect not to perform the NEW
UPDATE install but it appears mandatory, hence I cannot do updates now. This
is a disappointment. Please let me know here if you have any success with
suggestions given.

I (assumably) don't know, hence why I am here but I do hear your
frustration. "We" do need to hear something from M$ to address what is most
important, security issues and the vulnerability that this presents. Not
trying to over-react at this point but I think it is good to hear from other
users like you.
Ciao,

Same situation Lisa is seeing, with "Windows Update has encountered an error
and cannot display the requested page" and [Error number: 0x80072EE4]. I
stopped every background task that I could identify and still get the same
results.
MS support e-mailed me with 3 sets of things to try, and instructions to
send them a screen dump if those didn't solve the problem. They didn't help -
I sent the screen dump and I'm awaiting the next reply. If I find anything
that works, I'll certainly post it here.

Sorry to hear that you have experienced the same problem(s) but glad to see
that you will share it with us!

Will give it a shot. I have even tried injecting my problem with the
following msg:
Since MS has changed to the new download process, I cannot perform updates
and get the following msg:

But when it comes to establishing the Incident ID, the process sits there.
Very frustrating.

I have tried all of the options they offer without any success also. The
thing that bothers me is, my updates were a breeze until they changed the
format of the update process. It seems that the responsibility lies on m$ to
resolve this issue and as of yet, there has been no one from there company
that has responded to this thread.
-Miles
I have installed SP2 and still have the problem with not be allowed to
update. Perhaps it is time to head to MAC?
-Miles
After writing that none of these worked, MS suggested I download MS Windows
XP SP2, install it and try again. Miles, I see you've just done that. Here,
in case anyone following the thread wants to follow in our footsteps, is the
URL MS provided for SP2:
To download the Windows XP SP2, go to the following website:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/6/5/165b076b-aaa9-443d-84f0-73cf11fdcdf8/WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe
Please click Save to download SP2 installation package. Then double click
WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe on the local hard disk to install SP2.
And here are the things they suggested:
After doing some research, based on the information provided by you, I have
worked out a few more steps for you to complete in concern with the above
error code and would appreciate your time and efforts in trying the
suggestions and providing me with the result of the same at your earliest
convenience.
Norm, before we proceed further and try the next troubleshooting steps, I
would request you to bypass the Router and then try accessing Windows Update
Site and check if you are able to successfully access Windows Update Site. If
you encounter any difficulties in bypassing the router I would request you to
contact the Router manufacturer.
If you still encounter difficulties accessing Windows Update Site, kindly
try the next set of instructions listed below and check if this resolves the
issue for us.
Suggestion 1
***********
I am aware that you have checked the HOSTS file, however I would recommend
that we rename the HOSTS file as we have observed this issue mainly occurs
because of corrupt entries in the HOSTS file.
1. Click on Start/Search and then select All Files and Folders
2. Type HOSTS in "All or part of the file name:"
3. Make sure that the Look In box you select Local Hard Drives
4. Click on Search Now button
5. When the search is complete, you will find the HOSTS file.
NOTE: Please Ignore any files not having the exact name of "HOSTS". HOST
file for Windows XP is located at
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\folder.
Or
C:\Winnt\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\ if your system is an upgrade over Windows 2000
Ignore all files not having exact file name as HOSTS. The original HOSTS
file has no file extension.
6. Right click on Hosts file and select Rename. Change the name to OLDHOSTS.
Make sure you hit Enter after typing in the new name, so the changes can be
saved.
Please try accessing Windows Update Site and check if the issue is resolved.
If the issue stays, please try the next set of instructions in Suggestion 2.
Suggestion 2
************
This issue also occur if there are some applications running in the
background and are conflicting with the Windows Update Site.
There are a few basic things I would like to do to clean boot your system to
make sure that there are no applications running in the background that may
be conflicting with the site. Please complete the steps listed below.
1. Click Start/Run
2. Type “msconfig” without the quotation marks and click OK
3. Select “Selective Startup”. Unmark Load Startup Group Items
4. Click Apply and then Click OK
5. Restart your system
6. Connect to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install the
components of your choice.
7. When you are finished at the Windows Update site, please restart in
normal mode.
8. Click Start/Run
9. Type “msconfig” without the quotation marks and click OK
10. Select “Normal Startup”
11. Click Apply and then Click OK
12. Restart your system
Also disable any antivirus software and firewall while accessing the windows
update site.
If the issue remains, please try the next set of instructions in Suggestion 3.
Suggestion 3
***********
This issue also occur because of incorrect proxy settings. I would suggest
you to enable "use http 1.1 through proxy connections" in Internet Options.
To enable "use http 1.1 through proxy connections"
1. After Opening Internet Explorer click Tools / Internet Options.
2. Click the Advanced Tab.
3. Remove the check from use HTTP 1.1
4. Place a check in Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections.
5. Attempt to access the Windows Update site again.
6. If you are still experiencing difficulties with the update site, try
having both HTTP 1.1 and HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections checked.
Try accessing the Windows Update site and see if you are able to scan for
updates from your system.
Please let us know which of the above steps helped in resolving the issue
for us, I appreciate your confirmation on the status of the issue.
Sorry, have been away from the PC for a bit. Will try out the suggestions
that you have been provided with.
-Miles
I've stopped posting the suggestions from MS Support - there've been just
too many, and no progress at all. I'm on my 6th or 7th set of suggestions (at
least they're still corresponding), and among the 3 suggestions this time is
that I install XP SP2, which was suggested earlier and done... so they're now
starting to repeat...
I sent them a log file, and that seemed to spark a few new ideas (but also
sparked the old idea of installing SP2). They're back to looking for
corrupted Windows files too... and they want me to test for "black holes" -
they suspect the problem might be related to using a router (I would guess
that a whole lot of people use routers, so I would hope MS's design would
accomodate using a router!).
If I get any joy, I'll certainly let you and the forum know.
- Norm
I have used quite a few "sets" of suggestions w/o any success. The most
important thing for me is, this problem DID NOT exist until they changed the
update screen and whatever internal mods that went along with it. Somehow, I
think if "they" take that into consideration, perhaps the areas of change
will be found and isolated.
There must be a way to simply download from another M$ site the actual
files? I don't mind doing things in such a more simplified matter as long as
I can continue updating my system with the latest security patches and such.
Keep the faith,
-Miles

Hi
You can download the individual updates from the Windows Update Catalog:
Windows Update Catalog

HOW TO: Download Windows Updates and Drivers from the Windows Update Catalog
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=323166
You might want to sign up for Microsoft Security Update e-mail alerts as
well, click on the "E-mail Updates icon" here:

torgeir, Microsoft MVP Scripting and WMI, Porsgrunn Norway
Administration scripting examples and an ONLINE version of
the 1328 page Scripting Guide:

Going back to the V4 version works great. You can get right into the option
to scan for updates. Not sure what the V5 version provided but this will have
to do. Much thanks.

I turned off Zone Alarm and the update ran
2. Right after, i got 0x80070420 ErrorCode, so i shut down Windows Firewall.
Problem solved: Windows Update is working properly again.
3. Well, a new 0x800A01AE ErrorCode is showing now (what the hell?). To
solve this follow the instructions at
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/showarticle.aspx?articleid=38&ln=en
4. Before attempting to run WU again, restart windows to clean cache from
Internet Explorer.
NOTE: PLEASE ENABLE AGAIN your Antivirus/Firewall after updating Windows!!!
