There were two new updates recently for Win XP Professional on MS
Windows Updates website:

Root Certificates Update
and
MosChip Semiconductor Technology Ltd - Bus Controllers and Ports - PCI
Multi-IO Controller

They both failed on my computer.
It may, but this is my guess only because I was not in front of PC all
the time, be a result of dropped broadband connection during
download/installation.
The error messages are:

for MosChip Semiconductor Technology Ltd - Bus Controllers and Ports -
PCI Parallel Port

Installation Failure
Error Code: 0x800F0217
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the
following resources.
For self-help options:

Find Solutions
Windows Update Newsgroup
For assisted support options:
Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for issues related to
getting updates)

and for Root Certificates Update

Installation Failure
Error Code: 0x800706BA
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the
following resources.

Then I tried to repeat the Update and the error code has changed for
the
MosChip Semiconductor Technology Ltd - Bus Controllers and Ports - PCI
Multi-IO Controller

to

Installation Failure
Error Code: 0x800706BE
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the
following resources....

I am unable to find any solution for these codes on web at all. It
seems like they are not very common.
Any repeat of Windows Updates gives one of the above errors.
Does anybody have a clue what happened on my PC and how can I fix
this?
Fellow I took the PC to, advised me that I would need to reinstall XP.
This would be a killer for this PC, since some of the software on it
that I still need is not even supported anymore by manufacturers.

Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3)? IE version?

Tip: Do NOT install third-party hardware or software updates (e.g., the
MosChip update) via Windows Update. Get them from the manufacturer instead.

A few things you might try:

1. See
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/msg/ce6affb64c00596a

2. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883825 (ignore the title)

3. Try the Guided Help in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941 (ignore
the title).
