I, like a lot of people with genuine copies of windows, have experienced
problems with installing KB892130. I've been in and out of a lot of posts on
the subject and tried various offered solutions which have (and have not)
worked for some people. After numerous variations, the following has worked
and I'm now able to run the update service as it was intended.

Download psexec.exe from:-

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/PsExec.html

and put the file in root directory (C:\)

Download the WGA update executable from:-

http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/windowsxp-kb892130-enu-x86_7e1189ce89fb0c693cad6432a4c2f982dcea49a0.exe

and install in C:\temp.

Rename the file in C:\temp to WGA.exe (original file toooooo long)

At DOS command line type:-

psexec -i -s c:\temp\WGA.exe

The above tested and works - for me at least - Hope it works for others

Many thanks for all the inputs that got me to this position - there are too
many to mention by name - I just grateful to the newsgroups

Thanks so much. I worked on this problem since last night and your fix
works. Of course, some people have to bit a little tech savvy to
understand the dos commands, but it works. My only suggestion is that
when you get to a dos prompt, type c:\ to get to the root where
psexec.exe is located. Also, only choose the psexec.exe file when you
unzip the program because it has many many files. The others are not
needed.

If it wasn't for you, I would be here for days...thanks again.

If redirecting is disabled in your IE or by a "security software"
running in the background, here you go:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/3/a/f/3afe96b2-558e-4fdd-9d9e-d5ac4b6cbad4/WGADiag2.exe

Download and save the tool, quit your browser, execute the tool and
try to access Windows Update via IE again afterwards.

The link below worked for me also(xp home edition). I no longer get the
"failed to install" message, but there are apparently no updates for me to
download. The last download I have were on 2/16/06 (6 of them... 2 media
player, 3 security updates, 1 malicious software tool). Have there been any
updates for XP since then that anyone is aware of?

I don't usually have the need to use the message board, and am somewhat of a
novice at it. I hope I'm posting to the right place.

Thanks to all who post here. There are many knowledgable folks out there
who are saavy enough to know how to fix problems, but more importantly, share
them with others who are not as fortunate. I hope I can return the favor
someday.

Karman,

I normally keep my PC updated with both critcal (auto update) and optionals
(manual update). Having successfully overcome the WGA install issue, there
were three optionals required KB912945, 904942 and 912475 (checked via custom
not express button). If you've run "custom" update as opposed to "express",
I'd say your upto date

I thought the problem was fixed, but it apparently is not. I was able to
download the 3 updates you mentioned, but they would not install. Restarted
the computer, still no luck.

Any suggestions? Perhaps I should try one of the other fixes?

Karman,

I've previously had problems with updates not being installed when using the
windows update site. What I've found in every case is that it a file in one
of the updates has been updated by other means hence it fails all. What to
do ?? I recommend you go to download site search for each update required
(KBnnnnnnn) and download and update from here (you can save each update if
required or run). These are the "full" version updates. The one that is
causing you the problem will be easily identified - an error box will appear
telling you that a certain file has already been updated by other means -
click the "ignore" button. The update will continue and complete
successfully.

Hope this is useful

I did this and it worked great (thanks.). I can get my list of updates now.
However, I have one critical and 5 optional updates, I have tried to install
them all and they all fail. I tried the manual installation for the critical
one and that fails too (Security Update for Office XP (KB873352)). What can
I do?

Andrew,

Please see my reply to Karman57............When you say a manual update, can
I assume you have gone to the Download Centre to download the Critical Update
as I've suggested to Karman ???

Barrowhill,

your sollution didn't work for KB873352.
When I try to install it, even in dos, I get the message:
failure 1402
Setup can't open reg-key
HKEY_LOKAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\KB885884.
What can I do?

Go to this adress

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897553.aspx

And download "PsTools"
It's a ZIP-file with PsExec and some other tools in it!
