Can someone please tell me, as a novice, how to make sure I've got the new
version of 811493 on my machine? I downloaded and reinstalled it today. I
saw something on a Microsoft web page about checking your registry for HKEY
something-or-other, which means nothing to me. I don't have a clue how to do
that. I'm concerned about whether the patch took because in my Add/Remove
programs list 811493 shows as having been "last used on 25/05/2003" (and
today's the 31st). It also says the version is 20021212.173557.

Please can someone tell me, step-by-step, how to be sure I've got the newest
patch for 811493.

Find ntoskrnl.exe in your system32 folder (inside the Windows folder)
right click it and choose properties, go to the "version" tab.

Version 5.1.2600.1151, is the updated version
Version 5.1.2600.1150, then you have the problem version.
Version 5.1.2600.1106, is the version that came with Windows XP SP1.

regarding:

"Version 5.1.2600.1106, is the version that came with
Windows XP SP1."

so if i have that version, do i need the update?

If you need 811493, you need the update.
SP 1 does not fix that issue.

You didn't say, but looking at this version number I think you are using
Windows XP without SP1. The first part of the version number in fact is
the release date: 2002-12-12, and this date indicates that you have the
pre-SP1 version of 811493.
The problems with the original 811493 update only appeared with Windows XP
with SP1, so there is no updated version of 811493 for Windows XP without
SP1.
So in your case it doesn't apply.

I have 811493 on, but my versions not all the modules you have...I am XP PRO
SP1

The following DO exist in WINDOWS\system32 and versions/data MATCH!

24-Apr-2003 12:57 5.1.2600.1151 1,925,760 Ntoskrnl.exe with SP1

24-Apr-2003 12:57 5.1.2600.1151 1,949,440 Ntkrnlpa.exe with SP1

The following DO exist in WINDOWS\Driver Cache\I386

24-Apr-2003 12:57 5.1.2600.1151 1,921,536 Ntkrpamp.exe with SP1

24-Apr-2003 12:57 5.1.2600.1151 1,892,864 Ntkrnlmp.exe with SP1
IN ADDITION to another copy of in that same directory

24-Apr-2003 12:57 5.1.2600.1151 1,925,760 Ntoskrnl.exe with SP1

24-Apr-2003 12:57 5.1.2600.1151 1,949,440 Ntkrnlpa.exe with SP1

If this is no right I got into this mess by:
1) I had installed the bad vesion of 811493
2) Uninstalled it
3) Kept getting 'nagged' by Autoupdate to unstall
4) Installed the new vesion from Windows Update
5) Still kept getting 'nagged' by Autoupdate, and let it try figuring it
would clean it self up..

If I am in a mess....how do I get out?

Ed, when I select Help/About Windows in a directory window, my version of
Windows comes up as
Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633: Service Pack 1)

so I do indeed have both sp1 and sp2.

But I will check my system32 folder, HillBilly, and see what comes up, and
I'll do a search for those "Nt" files, Jordan.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I'll report back on what I find.

Looks fine to me Joe.

Jordan, when I looked for those files, I found the following:

There were two versions of each: one dated Apr 24th in c:\windows\driver
cache\i386;
and a Sep9/02 version in c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386;
and ntkrnlpa.exe also has an Aug17/01 version in c:\windows\system32.

I don't know why I've got more than one of those files on my machine.

But I did find I had version 5.1.2600.1151 of ntoskrnl.exe in my system32
folder, so I guess that means I have indeed got the newer 811493 patch.

Again, thanks for the help.

- Linda
