I found an article about a similar problem one year ago:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/list/en-us/default.aspx?&lang=en&cr=us&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&p=1&tid=8f427bc6-cdd0-4cfb-892e-37f1a1d9bf7b
Not sure I can apply that solution.
What is the recommanded solution ? Obviously, I don't want to reinstall nor
loose my data.
Any help appreciated.
Regards,

KB949358 was not applicable as stated. Method 1 & 2 were ineffective because
there is no restoration point. Method 3 (removal of pending.xml) worked
altough the registry key do be deleted do not exist.
The article also lack to mention you may have to load additional driver.
This was my case since the system has a RAID controller requiring a driver
at boot time.
The article end by telling to install update 937287 to avoid the same
problem in the future. On my system, 937287 says it is not required.
Anyway the problem is solved and I was able to apply the remaining updates
without issue. I'll come back here to describe any adverse effect I may
discover in the future (the article is somwhat alarming to system behaviuor
after the fix).
Thanks a lot.
