Windows update failure (0x80071a91)

Hi,
I've been unable to install any updates for a while now, it keeps failing
with error code 0x80071a91. Ive tried manually installing with no luck either.

What are the specs on your machine. I'm having a similar issue. Beta
2 build 5384 x86. I'm running a Dell Optiplex GX620. Pretty much the
standard build from Dell, but with 4 gigs of RAM, a Radeon X600 GFX
card, and a 160 GB SATA drive.

The error code you are complaining about has not been seen
in this newsgroup (WU) before. In fact I can't even find it documented
by its hex value in the usual place. FWIW my guess would be
that it could be a hexidecimal use of this code:

In that case I don't think that there is sufficient information in this log.
You could try supplementing it by invoking verbose logging
as documented in this article:

Or supplement it using FileMon (freeware from SysInternals,
hopefully it still works in Vista? <eg>)

See if there is more information in the log created during the install.
Usually they are given a filename equal to the update name with an
extension of .log. However, if you aren't sure what filenames diagnostics
are being recorded under you could search for all files which changed
on the date of the update and sort by that field. Then scroll to find files
which changed during the exact interval that the update was running.
Then drag likely looking names to a Notepad window to test them
for (human) readability.

WUSA is not something I am familiar with.
I suspect it may be Windows Update Service Agent
in which case WU might not be the best newsgroup
for diagnosing this problem normally anyway.
Therefore I am cross-posting this to both the WSUS
and Vista General newsgroups.
I suspect you are posting using the Vista Help site
which does not make clear that the last 5 items in its
list of "Vista newsgroups" are in fact not specifically
for Vista. Unfortunately, it restricts access to only
the newsgroups it lists and the WSUS NG is not included
in that portal. In order to search there and read other
threads via the web interface to newsgroups you will need
to find a more general portal; otherwise simply
use your Windows Mail app to see all msnews NG.
If WM works the same as OE you may be able
to start that by copying this URL to your Address bar
and pressing Enter:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/
