For several months now this computer running Windows XP will not install the
latest Windows Updater. I try to install the file manually and it won't
install either. The error code I see is 0x8024D007. I have searched for
that on the KB and it doesn't seem to know anything about it either.

I have also tried the procedure Neil Rubenking outlined in TechTips in
PCMag, October 2008, p112 (net stop wuauserv, regsvr32
%windir%\system32\wups2.dll, net start wuauserv) to no avail.

I have just installed Internet Explorer Beta 2 and get the same results.

How on earth can I get Windows Updates to work on this version of XP?

Thanks,

Turner

I have tried the procedures in both KB articles shown below. Neither works.

I have also tried manually reinstalling the latest updater. The updater is
evidently where the problem is because the installation fails with the error
code quoted in my original post.

In case I didn't mention it, this is SP with SP2. Since updates have
ceased, I have been unable to install SP2

What next?

Please confirm what SP level your OS is at.

If it is below SP2, then you may need to install SP2 before attempting
anything further.

Huh?

Right click on My Computer | select Properties | What version is listed here
(e.g., Windows XP Service Pack 1)?

Wow! Did I ever mess that up!

I'm using Windows XP with SP2. I meant to say that since updates have
ceased, I have been unable to install SP3.

I have also seen other posts asking about firewalls and etc. The computer
has Zone Alarm installed, but it has not been updated (pay subscription has
expired) and has been disabled. The computer is relying on the firewall in
the router. Another computer sitting right next to it is doing the same and
has no problem with XP or Vista (dual boot) updates. The computer I'm using
right now is also dual boot and neither XP nor Vista Ultimate have update
problems. This computer is using Windows Live One Care.

Sorry about the initial confusion.

Today I downloaded and manually installed Windows XP SP3 and updates
miraculously started working again. After the SP3 install, Windows Update
found 46 updates needed and installed them all except one for Outlook 2002
which is not on the computer any more.

Whatever was broken, SP3 must have fixed it (maybe).

I checked before all this started and the "About Windows" dialog swore up and
down it was Win XP SP2. Honest.

Thanks for your feedback. I've heard similar stories from others about WU
"suddenly starting to work" over the last weekend.

Perhaps the new version of the WU client has been released to a new part of the
internet?

Harry.
