Todays release contains a security update KB954156

This fails to install due to the fact the file size is 0kb so
definitely an error on microsofts part in pointing to the
correct file to download!

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1) when
posting to this newsgroup, please.

Are you attempting to install this update manually or via Windows Update?

The 0kb does not point to a problem - it points to accurately telling you
that the file is already downloaded and all that is needed to install it.
The problem is on your machine.

As many will tell you - ignore the title and symptoms listed in the article
referred to. Do method 1 and 2 and see if it fixes your issue whether or
not you repaired anything.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
Try method 1 and try to update*.
If it fails, try method 2 and try to update*.

*try to update:
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
- If it asks you to install anything before you see a selection of "Custom"
or "Express" - do so.
- Once you see the "Custom" or "Express" selection, choose "Custom".
- Scan for updates.
- When it lists what it finds - install the critical ones.
- You are generally safe doing the Optional Software Updates. I suggest
avoiding the Optional Hardware Updates completely.

If you don't know - you likely have 32bit - x86...
(It wouldn't install even if you got the wrong version.)

I had same problem.

You must have Windows Media Encoder 9 installed before the update will
install. After I downloaded and installed Windows Media Encoder 9 the
update installed and all is good now :)

Thank you Shenan... I have now tried Method 2. I d/l the x86 unto my
desktop...& then went start/browse & clicked on the d/l x86 so it went to the
"command line". I then added /wuforce to the command line...Clicked OK...
BUT I get a pop up saying that Windows cannot find the file. Do I have to
add the /wuforce to the file name on the desktop b4 I put it on the command
line??

Update won't install either. Tried methods 1 and 2. Tried to install Windows
Media Encoder 9. It says I already have another version of it installed and
that I should remove it using add/remove programs. But it's not listed in
there. So I'm stucked and waiting for another suggestion. Thanks.

But it refuses to install Windows Media Encoder 9 unless I remove the other
version ! Where is this other version ? It's not listed in my add/remove
programs !

Just install the new one... it will overwrite the old one... No need to look
for the old to uninstall it.

Wineman, how many times do I have to tell you that the Windows Media Encoder
9 installer REFUSES to install the encoder UNLESS I remove the other version
on my machine ? And that it tells me to look for it in Add/Remove Programs,
and when I look there, it's not listed ?

Maybe, but then, I shouldn't be prompted to install the update ! And anyway,
it says I do have it, but another version of it !

If someone understands french in here, I'll tell you exactly waht it says :

"Une autre version de ce produit est déjà installée. Impossible de
poursuivre l'installation de cette version. Pour configurer ou supprimer la
version existante de ce produit, utilisez l'application Ajout/Suppression de
programmes du Panneau de configuration".

And in the box, my only option is to click "OK". Then the installer closes.

Hi Eric, I'm not having an issue (since I did never install
Windows Media Encoder 9) nor is KB954156 beeing offered.

May the error messages while trying to install KB954156 be a result
of Windows Media Encoder beeing "uninstalled" but the Windows Update
detection logic offers the update anyway in case a Program Files
folder named "Windows Media Components" which contains a folder named
"Encoder" exists on those systems? Looks like beeing a folder which
is left over of the Windows Media Encoder uninstaller or so.

FWIW,
Freudi

In the meantime it looks like KB954156 beeing offered if *any* version
of Windows Media Encoder has been installed. That applies for "Windows
Media Encoder 7". The result is a failing installation of KB954156.

Just for kicks I installed Windows Media Encoder 9 and then manually
installed the update KB954156. I had no problems. This would suggest
to me that individual systems must respond differently to the update. I
would suspect anti-virus software or some similar program is interfering.
