i have WU set for notify me but don't automatically download or install
them.
in the past, i would receive the yellow advisory shield stating downloads
are ready to download..
i would click the shield, & updates would download. i could click the shield
to see the download progress.
after the download, the shield appears again, advsing updates ready to
install.i then could choose to install them by clicking on the shield, &
watch the install progress.
today upon start up the shield appeared offering 900485. i selected to
download. the shield disappeared & did not reappear. i checked shut down, &
it offered to shut down & install update, which i did.
is this something new? that you must install by shutting down machine? where
before, the shield stayed advising updates ready to install, & you could
click the shield to bring up the install box & watch the progress when you
chose.
my concern, is i always disable AV before installing updates. i did disable
the AV prior to selecting shut down & install.
no problems noticed so far.
any info appreciated.
thank you, len kiesling
I think you were just being inpatient, Lenmeister, and chose to shut down at
an inopportune moment. <wink> I've not seen anyone else report this
behavior. Were you also offered 905474?

went to update newsgroup after that, to see if there were any problems.
(you're supposed to do that BEFORE installing! oops!)
saw problems with 905474 posted in newsgroups. i wasn't sure it it was part
of the updates i just installed, so i panicked! did system restore!
after, i was automatically offered 912812 ( which i finally installed
yesterday, & created a restore point before installing it) & 900485.
i clicked on shield to download. again, shield disappeared; waited;
(possibly not long enough)
& checked shut down. "shut down & install updates" was available, so i
selected it & shut down.
turned back on; checked some programs for functionality. all seem ok so far.
went to windows update site. 905474 validation tool is being offered. did
not install. it.
my add/remove in control panel shows a validation item installed march 2006.
this has happened in the past. shield disappearing. not sure if it reappears
later, because i go to update site & install from there. i use custom
because i like to see progress.
always AV disabled. you taught me that!
thank you, len kiesling the lenmeister

If an update was installed, you'll find it listed in Add/Remove Programs.
Best to uninstall it, not use System Restore. (It ain't Win98, Lenmeister.)

A Restore Point is created automatically when installing an update.

This is a different WGA thingy. See

Yeah, I've done that, too. Automatic Updates doesn't always like that.

The behavior of the shield disappearing after accepting the download and
the subsequent attempt to install at shutdown is NOT expected behavior.
When AU is set to " Notify me but do not download or install them " it
is *suppose* to give the End User control over what is downloaded and
installed. There should be no "stealth" installations without your approval.
To see that behavior associated with the latest WGA tool is not
comforting to say the **least** and does **not** engender trust with the
entire updating process.

in between the 4-11-06's series of critical updates, & 4-26-06's critical
900485 update i received a critical update for dell onboard intel video
chipset thru windows auto update. (which i have set to choose when to
download & install)
i clicked the update icon, yellow shield, & saw it was a chipset update. it
came thru WU as critical, so i clicked to install. the shield disappeared. i
ignored the disappearance at this time.
soon after, i went to shut down & saw option to shut down & install update.
i was confused, because i had not seen this option before. i guess that's
because i have WU set for me to choose.
i shut down & installed. after repowering to check, the only problem i had
was to readjust screen resolution in display properties, which was
sucessful.
the exact same thing happened on the other 4 machines. the other machines
are all set to install automatically, not by choice. & all 4 had to have
resolution readjusted, which was sucessful.
some time after that, the 900485 was offered & as previously stated, i
installed at shutdown.
the dell intel driver was october 2005. all 5 machines are dell 4700 desktop
xp pro sp2 i.e. 6.0
4 with outlook & mine with outlook express 6.0. 2 have hp software, with one
of those having share to web. kelly's fix was applied to that one sucessful,
before revised 908531.
all machines functioning normal so far. web surfing, using word & excel,
using email programs, screen resolutions adjustable, address books opening.
just trying to be helpful i cannot repay these newgroups for all they have
done for me. since tech support is costly, i rely heavily on you folks. i
remember when dell offered "lifetime" support & answered ALL my questions &
fixed all problems.

pa, i just checked what updates are being offered on my home, xp home sp2
dell 4600 desktop.
900485 & 905474.
>>so i panicked! did system restore!<<
now i remember that these 2 were offered on my work machine. when i did a
system restore,
>>so i panicked! did system restore!<<
the 900485 was reoffered, (i installed it by shutting down), but not the
905474, & is still not being offered. 905474 is not listed in add/remove.
900485 is
my question:
should i install these 2 updates on my home machine?
900485 is for a rare glitch, & is an old update.
905474 is some type of validation tool.
i don't see the need to install these. so i need advice.
thank you, lenmeister

This is normal for certain classes of update, though you might not have
witnessed it before. 900485 was one of that class of update. This class of
update cannot be properly installed during normal service (they would
require a restart anyway), so the installation is deferred until the next
shut-down.
