This left Office 03 inoperable -- whenever I tried to fire up Outlook
the Windows Installer would come up, and it would eventually abend
with a message indicating it couldn't find a needed file. Similarly
with IE7 -- it would bring up the installer for Front Page.
Microsoft help with great difficulty managed to get Office 03
uninstalled, and IE7 is working again. But attempts to reinstall
Office 03 repeatedly failed, abending with an error 1304 - error
writing to file c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\smart
tag\mstag.tlb. verify you have access to that directory.
Quicken Online backup also came up asking me for a password, something
it never did before.
Any advice appreciated -- Microsoft staff very courteous and helpful
but they seem to be barking up the wrong tree, focusing on the symptom
and not the problem. --Ed G.

You've tried the very same with McAfee Internet Security beeing shut
down *completely* (including its services) and with having Windows
Firewall enabled instead?
Bye,

Well, about a week ago, Microsoft staff succeeded in getting my Office
03 working again and actually installing the security update. It must
have taken several technicians about ten hours total over two days.
They had great difficulty in uninstalling Office 03, but they finally
succeeded -- then they had great difficulty reinstalling it -- but
they finally succeeded -- and then the same thing with the KB943460
update -- but they finally succeeded. If you go to the update history
page in Windows Update, it shows the install cancelled -- but if you
go to Add/Remove Programs, it shows it's installed -- and it no longer
thinks it needs to be installed.
Anyway, I thought I was out of the woods -- my computer seemed to be
working fine again -- but earlier today I tried to run iTunes for the
first time since the initial install of KB943460 was unsuccessful --
and got the same problem again. It brings up the Windows installer
dialog, and then just sits there. You hear the hard drive going dit-
dit-dit-dit for a while, then you hear some more concentrated
activity, then back to dit -dit-dit-dit, and this goes on forever. I
can Cancel the installer dialog, but even that takes a long time.
Any advice or assistance greatly appreciated. Incidentally, looking
at a previous posting, I note that my version of shell32.dll is
6.0.2900.3241. --Ed

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 may be helpful. And no, I don't
think that these problems you ran into are really *caused* by KB943460
but "may" be influenced by McAfee Internet Security running in the back-
ground.
