After updating my comp I can not see my drives D and E in
Windows Explorer. The trays open and close but can't
read data or audio CD or DVD. When i connect external CD
Writer it gives me the message that windows detected new
hardware but i can not access it from Win Explorer. In
Device Menager both D and E drives have exclamation point
next to them. After i uninstall and reinstall them it
gives me the message that new hardware has been installed
inproperly and will not work. same thing happens when I
plug in digital camera. Any ideas? Completely
reinstalling Windows XP is a last thing on my mind :-)

Can you be more specific in terms of what updates?

That will help us find a possible cause of your problem.

Definitely hold off on any o.s. re-install. Though, gotta say, your question should be addressed in one of several XP groups.
You have an *external* device(s) which requires some XP services to be enabled.
Removable Storage Service & Remote Procedure Call.

Did you ever disable or un-configure some Windows Services?
Using XP Start menus, select Help and Support.
In Search box ( upper-top left side) type in
enable or disable a drive

It will bring up a help topic. Look at it.

To open Removable Storage, go to Start menu / Control Panel > Click Performance
and Maintenance> Administrative Tools.
Select Computer Management. In the console tree, double-click Storage and then
double-click Removable Storage. Set the startup type to automatic.

Use & search the XP newsgroups ! using Outlook Express:

I installed all available updates exept for 818529: June
2003, Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer 6 Service
Pack 1.
But I think it happend after I installed Service Pack 1.
The thing is everything was OK before I installed 818529
Update.
After that it wouldn't open window in window. So i had to
do safe recovery on my HP. And then I reinstalled SP 1.
If I try to use "Add New Hardware" it gives me a
message: "Windows cannot start this hardware device
because its configuration information (in the registry)
is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"
All the phisical connections are OK.

Max !
See HP's announcement, and pls do check the HP support site.
HP developed a patch named ** SP1RcvryFix.exe ** . This patch can be
installed before or after installing XP SP1 to correct the
incompatibility with the PC manufacturer's system recovery tool.

I installed that ** SP1RcvryFix.exe ** Maurice but it
didn.t do any good. It looks like I'm out of luck.

I was thinking about reinstalling SP 1. Although
microsoft doesn't recommend it. The first time I
installed it it asked me if I wanted to create backup
files in case I wanted to uninstall it later. I chose not
to and now i can't uninstall it. Do you think it is a
good idea to reinstall SP1 on top of the old one?

I mentioned that only because I see you have an HP pc & in no way meant it as a cure for your current situation.

Max:
You have an HP pc with only the OEM Windows XP & no real XP CD---- right?
Just their recovery CD, right?
If so, that would rule out being able to run an XP repair-install.

I would not be thinking of doing another SP1 install. Given your other notes about the devices & the registry, if I were in your shoes, I'd be thinking of seeing what I had in System Restore -- ie, as if you were going to restore, and see if I had a restore point at a date prior.
Of course, if only you had a system backup from before all this, you could use that.

I highly recommend you switch your posts to one of the XP groups. a) This is off-topic here, & b) You will have much better luck there.
