Suggest you download the standalone SP3 package for XP and *save* it.

Then read this:
Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3

and/or this:
Windows XP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron/archive/2008/05/08/windows-xp-sp3-read-all-prerequisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx
Then install SP3 by creating a folder on the root drive [ the drive
where Windows is installed to ] and move WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe
to that folder. Name it SP3 or something similar.
Now click Start > Run > click the Browse button, navigate to the newly
created folder, open it, then click on
WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe to highlight it, then click Open,
and then OK or press Enter.
IF IE7 or IE8 is installed, suggest you uninstall it prior to applying
SP3. If you don't and an issue occurs with the installation or
performance of SP3, then you'll be much happier that you did.
