Cannot run windows update from Win xp pro sp3

This used to work for me. The warning I get says that the following services
are necessary.
automatic updates
bits
event log

I have them as follows:
au - started manual
bits - started auto
event log - started automatic

It must be dependent on some other service I turned off. Does anyone have
any ideas?

If this is Windows XP, set AU to Automatic and BITS to Manual.

Please provide some pertinent info so that someone *may* assist you.
Also, include ** at least the last 50 or so lines ** of the
