Error Number 0x80072EE2

through most post that have been written since 17 Oct. I have not found
anything related to my problem. I am running Windows XP Professional. I
click on the "Windows Update" button and Internet Explorer attempts to
access the page. It never accesses the page.
After reading some suggestions I attempted a few. (e.g. deactivate firewall,
anti-virus program, etc.) None worked. I was finally able to get the page to
come up after finding a link in one of the posts and it attempted to scan,
but gave me an error, (i.e. Error Number 0x80072EE2). I tried even
troubleshooting through the Microsoft troubleshooting web page. I tried the
suggested remedy there and still could not get the update to produce any
results.
It would be greatly appreciated for any assistance in solving this nagging
problem.

When using the Windows Update website you may find that the service
FAILS to update your computer and returns a "General Error" message:

Do you have full access to c:\program files\windowsupdate?
If you do, can you remove everything in there other than c:\program
file\windowsupdate\v4\iuhist.xml and then try to use Windows Update again.

If not, you're being blocked from a248.e.akamai.net . Open the HOSTS
file with Wordpad and search for a248.e.akamai.net. Delete it, Save the
HOSTS file before closing it. Also, add these sites to the Trusted sites
zone via Internet Options, click the Security tab, click the Trusted
sites icon :

Check the HOSTS file for any reference to the sites you added to the
Trusted sites zone other than https://a248.e.akamai.net . It appears
that you are being directed to the older update site,
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v4/.
Attempt downloading and installing the ActiveX Windows Update software
controls manually from :
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/cab/x86/unicode/iuctl.cab
and save them to your desktop. Extract the .cab file following the steps
below:
1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.
2. Click "Open".
3. Select all the files listed.
4. Right click on them and click "Extract."
5. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."
6. Go to the location you selected and right click the iuctl.inf file.
5. Click "Install."
REMEMBER to temporarily disable your antivirus program before trying to
obtain and install the software controls . This includes any component
of it that will interfere with ActiveX files being downloaded/installed.
Check Internet Options for these settings :
Click the Security tab. Click once on the Internet icon, click the
Custom Level button, under " ActiveX controls and plug-ins ":
Download signed ActiveX controls .... Enable
Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins.... Enable
Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting... Enable
Under Scripting :
Enable all settings
Now click the Trusted sites icon, click the Custom Level button:
Make sure that the settings listed above are the same here.
Now click the Advanced tab :
Under " Browsing " put a check mark next to " Enable Install On Demand "

0x80072EE2 error with no further explanation. I'm running
ME on this computer; the error occurred during the initial
scan for updates. This began after Microsoft sent a new
Windows Update download.

I am not sure if it was after an update or not. I know that it started
sometime around the 11th of August.
I have tried all that Mow and David have suggested. Still the same result.
What I do find a little strange is that it not only has affected the Windows
Update, but also other web sites as well. e.g. I can try and access
www.yahoo.com and get nothing. I can then try and access www.yahoo.de and
have no problem accessing the page. It also is the same with amazon.
www.amazon.com is not a problem to access, but when I try to access
www.amazon.de it accesses it, but it is slow to load the graphics. I mean
very slow and I have a DSL connection. I would say that it could be the
server for amazon.de, but it could be part of the same problem.
Should anyone have any other suggestions I am ready to try them.
Without having to say it, the help has been appreciated and superb.

If it started around the 11th of August it is probably related to the
switching to the akamai servers for updates. Are you on a network or
using a router that may contain a hardware firewall ?
I'm still wagering that it is a HOST DNS entry that is preventing you
from accessing Windows Update and blocking access to the Yahoo.com site.
Do you have any spyware blocking programs ? And, which firewall are you
using besides the one native to XP ?

You may be right about the HOST DNS. I have been able to access the Windows
update site and download the updates. This was accomplished after reading
some of the other posts about another subject. It had a link to click on
which was a zipped file for the HOST file. I unzipped it as instructed to
the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc. Once I overwrote the older file and
tried to access the Windows update site I was able to access it and scan for
updates. I downloaded the updates and rebooted my computer.
Now, I am thinking the problem is fixed. After establishing my connection I
again attempted to access the Windows update site. It started doing the same
thing again, with the same error. Talk about being peeved. Well, I figured
if the zipped file helped fix the problem maybe I should unzip it again.
Which I did. Well when I extracted it to the directory again it prompted me
to overwrite the other file. The size of the new file is 125,667 kb. the one
I am overwriting is only 57,713 kb. Wait a minute if I overwrote this file
before what happened to the original size? Well, I overwrote the file and
again was able to access the update site again.
This euphoria only last for a minute because when I want to jump to another
Windows web page it starts acting like it can't access the page. Huh!!! Go
figure.
Anyway, I did uninstall a spyware program called Pest Patrol. It seems to
have not changed the behaviour. I use Zone Alarm Pro for a firewall. I am
not on a network and I don't connect through a router. Another funny little
piece. Whenever I use the zip to extract the file and overwrite the other
file the older file increases in size only so slightly, e.g. 57,713 kb, next
time it is 57,863 kb, then 57,959.
If you have any ideas please let me know. It is greatly appreciated.

blocking software you're using or what it is without me examining just
what it could be. It is also conceivable that you have unwanted
"visitors" lurking on your system that is writing to the HOSTS file to
prevent your access to Windows Update and thus, to be able to obtain
updates and patches.
What antivirus program do you use and have you kept the definition files
updated and scanned your system lately ?
For antivirus/trojan scans , go here :

If you have no AV installed use the Panda online scan. If you do have an
AV installed, use the " Online antivirus test ".
Use the " GFI on line trojan scanner " to check for trojans.
If you find any, go to the " free tools " page and download AVG for
viral activity, TrojanCheck v5.04 for a trojan.

I have done everything you have suggested and still have the problem, with
an exception. Before I go any further the virus protection program I use is
eTrust EZ Antivirus. It has the latest update installed.
After running the trojan scanner and the results being negative I then
checked for parasites. I purchased a copy of the Aluria's Spyware program
and ran that, finding numerous parasites, which I deleted without any
negative consequences. After doing all that the problem still persists. The
next step was to go to http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm. There I
read that the HOSTS file could be deleted. So I deleted it. Then I clicked
on the Windows Update button and the browser opened and miracles of all
miracles it worked. I even tried the other web sites it has not allowed me
to access and they all work.
So you think I am happier than a pig wallowing in mud, well to ensure that
the problem went away I rebooted the computer and after everything loaded
tried accessing the Windows update again. No success. Nothing. So I deleted
the HOSTS file again, that somehow appeared again, and attempted to access
the Windows update again. It worked. So you are right about the HOSTS file,
but what could be doing it. BTW, after deleting the HOSTS file I did a
search for the file again and somehow appeared again.
While doing the search for the HOST file one of the results looks kind of
suspicious. I have these files; hosts_access, hosts_access.3, hosts_access
and a couple of the same thing. The directory it lists is
"omniORB_2.7.1/man/man5" then the other directory list
"omniORB_2.7.1/src/lib/omniORB2/orbcore/gatekeepers/tcpwrapper"
The funny thing about this listing it does not show that C: is the source
only what I have written. Figment of my imagination?

Just to let you know I think the problem is fixed. After going to

I read some of the things to do and also some of the batch available to fix
it so that the HOSTS file does not get over written. I used the batch file
first to see if it worked and it did. Then I used the other batch file to
make the HOSTS file read only. After making it work I decided to unzip the
HOSTS file I had installed before and then went to the file and right
clicked and selected Properties, then made it read only. I restarted the
computer and then tested it. It has worked since. So I am not sure if it is
fixed entirely, but it seems to being working at this moment.

If anyone is still looking for a fix for this check your clock on your
computer. Mine was off by three months and windows update did not
work. I set it and tried it agian and it worked.
