I installed some XP updates and now i.e. 6 is missing.
It isn't listed in the program files and the short cut on
the desk top is gone. The internet explorer subdirectory
under program files appears to have the MSN set up files
and Roxio's CD Creator program instead of ie explorer's
exe file. Any suggestions? I tried installing th ie 6
service pack 1, but it said that explorer on the computer
is newer than the service pack version. I'm a bit
baffled.

Clicking on the Internet icon in the start menu brings up
the Internet Properties menu. Definitely baffled. I
connected to the web through Microsoft Word since I
couldn't find I.E.

You ought to do a Search (Find) on "iexplore.exe" .
Also, go to Windows Start button, select Run, and type in
IEXPLORE <enter>

On the assumption that IE browser is still on this pc, it should come up.

Do you have it in your Start menu? E.g. Ctrl-Esc,I

You can turn that one on by using the
Customize Start Menu, General tab
(Right-click the Start button, select Properties, click on Customize...)

They have moved the setting for the one on the Desktop out of
the Internet Options, Advanced tab and I have forgotten where to.
Hmm... aha. Desktop Items, via Display Properties.

Quickest route that I can think of: Win-D,Shift-F10,r,Ctrl-Tab,Alt-D,I
