Clicking on the Internet icon in the start menu brings up
the Internet Properties menu. Definitely baffled. I
connected to the web through Microsoft Word since I
couldn't find I.E.

On the assumption that IE browser is still on this pc, it should come up.

Do you have it in your Start menu? E.g. Ctrl-Esc,I
You can turn that one on by using the
Customize Start Menu, General tab
(Right-click the Start button, select Properties, click on Customize...)
They have moved the setting for the one on the Desktop out of
the Internet Options, Advanced tab and I have forgotten where to.
Hmm... aha. Desktop Items, via Display Properties.
Quickest route that I can think of: Win-D,Shift-F10,r,Ctrl-Tab,Alt-D,I
