I get these updates that will not install. They (all 3) always fail. Any
ideas?

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB928365)
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1
(KB928366)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2007 (KB890830)

Thanks

Do you see any other threads here about the .NET Framework updates? Have
you read through all of the (helpful) posts in them?

I got a better idea. Why don't they fix it? Why do we have to hunt and hunt
and hunt for fixes to problems we did not create?

The framework update is failing due to corruption of the original
installation of the framework package. That to me appears to be a problem
with your computer not the update. Perhaps blame the person who looks after
the maintenance etc on your computer.

oh, that's great ... blame us users ... all dozens and dozens if not
thousands who are having this problem ... certainly let's not blame the great
Microsoft often known for bad updates. Yeah, that's the ticket! <all
sarcasm intended>

TaurArian,

That's a very glib and cavalier response. You seem to be very sure that the
problem so many people here are having is somehow THEIR fault, and not the
update itself.

Shouldn't someone from the number one Software company in the world who
writes -- and publishes -- an update for a prior installation that MAY
(according to you) be corrupt first test for that possible corruption?

And if it IS corrupt, shouldn't a well-written update try to fix the
corruption and then install? Or just not attempt to install.

I think a phrase from the Hippocratic Oath that all doctors pledge is apt
here: "To help, or at least to do no harm."

Maybe, anytime I have an update dealing with .NET Framework, I will set my
updates to ignore and not remind me of the update. It may save a lot of
headaches

Another to TaurArian - you wrote "The framework update is failing due to
corruption of the original installation of the framework package. That to me
appears to be a problem with your computer not the update. Perhaps blame the
person who looks after the maintenance etc on your computer. " For those of
us not Geeky enough to know - how do we fix a corrupted framework package.
Until these failures I had no difficulty with installs.

Addendum - I get this message when the failure occurs - "SL36.tmp has
encountered a problem and needs to close." The name of the tmp file changes
with each try. Sometimes SL9.tmp, SL12.tmp etc. Does this help in the
diagnosis?

I agree with georef. I have the same problem. It seems I must have done
something wrong for the update not to work. Perhaps we are two the only two
people in the World with this problem. On the other hand, it's quite useful
having thousands of unpaid IT people debugging Microsoft updates - why should
they pay people to do it when the can get it done for nothing. Is it really a
productive exercise spending perhaps millions of man hours debugging MS
software.

Then what is the point of all this if nobody at Microsoft are listening?

Microsoft can keep Vista, when support (That's a Joke) runs out on XP Pro I
am going LINUX!

I didn't say MS "isn't listening" or that PSS doesn't monitor this
newsgroup.

The point is that all MS Public Newsgroups offer peer-to-peer, /voluntary/
support. Some newsgroups are Managed and get more monitoring & attention
than others. This newsgroup is not one of them.

on 4 computers.

I finally got all the updates on my computer.

Basically I uninstalled all .NetFrame (All Versions). Prior to that, I had
download all versions to my computer.
This includes:
1 DotNetFrame 1.0
2 DotNetFrame 1 sp3
3 DotNetFrame 1.1
4 DotNetFrame 1.1 sp1
5 DotNetFrame 2.0
6 DotNet Compact Frame 2 sp1
7 DotNetFrame 3.0

Microsoft puts out a CleanUp Tool that I installed. However, when I tried
to run it, it came up with a list of 33 application installed on my computer
that it says may not work properly after the cleanup tool runs. Of course,
after reading this, I did not run the clean up tool. Fortunately, I was
able to install all of the .NetFrame stuff from my downloads. Then I went
thru the updates to get 2-updates that I did not have.

Anyway, all is working great now.

I saved all of the .NetFrame (Crap) installations because I know I will have
to do the exact same thing again... each time another stupid update come
out. I'm sick of these updates, but at least my problems are solved for a
month or so (until the next update).

Was it Rodney King who said "Can we all just get along?"
After reading all these comments I am wondering if I'm just wasting my time
by posting here.
I see and understand most of your debates but no solutions has been made.
The facts are that some of us will always need to blame someone for
something. Also some of us don't have much of a choice but will have to use
Microsoft products. This is not a problem with me. It’s a job and a hobbie.
Unless the majority of the business world converts to another OS, I have to
support this product. Now with that said: Can you help a brother out?
Same issue but different scenario.

Crystal Ball says - Windows XP

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by
using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Ignore the title and try Method 1 first if not then Method 2.

What bug are you referring to ? The updates failure to install is being
caused by something that is amiss with *your* computer.
You can get no-charge support for getting the .NET Framework Security
updates installed. From KB928365 and KB928366:

> If you have problems with this security update that are not addressed by these known issues,

Has the system been able to install any later release of the Windows
Malicious Software Removal Tool other than the March release ?
If not, that may be a sign that 'unwanted visitors' are present.
Strongly suggest you see if the system can be scanned here using
Internet Explorer: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm
