Windows Update Acting Up

I have Windows Update set to 'Check for update but let me choose whether to
download and install them'
Last week I hadn't gotten any update notifications so, like I always do, I
ran WU. There were 12 or so
important updates available although I wasn't notified of these. I
downloaded and installed them.
Today, Windows Update AUTOMATICALLY downloaded and installed without my
consent, even though
The settings are still the same - to notify me.

Today's update was Windows Update Agent 7.4.7600.226.
Maybe the new update agent corrected the problem

What could have caused this?

From my understanding unless one disables automatic updates
the new update agent will automatically download and install.
But, I'm curious about the 12 or so important updates I was not
notified about.
Should I have read more of the article?

Installing the WUAgent upgrade should not affect your Automatic Updates
settings or functionality.

Absent any serious numerical Errors in your windowsupdate.log (cf.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093), you may be seeing a delay (i.e., in
downloading all approved updates) caused by excessive demand on the servers
("Update is not allowed to download due to regulation"). See...

NB: With the Notify Only (and sometimes with the Automatic or Download but
Notify) option enabled, you'll only see AU's yellow "Updates are ready to be
installed" icon when /all/ of the "approved" updates have downloaded.

If some but not all of the approved updates have downloaded, you may
encounter a "Click to install important updates and then shut down" button
when you go to turn off your computer. Using it will install the
already-downloaded updates...but there's no way of knowing which updates
they are...at least not without doing a little digging in windowsupdate.log.

In most cases, you can install all of the updates manually via
Windows/Microsoft Update website (WinXP) or by running Windows Update
manually (Vista) instead: Understand that by doing so, you're pushing all
other Automatic Updates users further back in the queue...which may explain,
at least in part, why Automatic Updates hasn't brought them in for you yet.

As a part of the service upgrade, an update to the Windows Update and Automatic Updates client code will be required. We will start this infrastructure update in late August, and it will take a couple of months to complete..."

This prompted me to revisit http://update.microsoft.com , which failed as before, then http://www.update.microsoft.com , which this time caused installing a new ActiveX (said of 09 Aug 2009!) then installed correctly the 14 pending updates (On last "2nd Tuesday", 13 Oct 2009, MU stopped with an error *even before* starting updating itself or detecting Windows updates).

The adding of "www.", while unlikely the cause of fix, can't be totally excluded, and the continuous upgrade process mentioned in the blog will go on for months, so this post, in addition to a BIG thank to "TaurArian" for getting me out of this nightmare, is also to recall not to stop regularly trying the various entries, as long as you have troubles with Microsoft Update.
