I have windows 2000 pro with sp4 installed. I cannot
update the updater either via the update site or by the
manual method. The manual method gives me a DNS error. I
am the administrator. How do I get myself updated with
the updated software if microsoft does not let me into
their site? I have a ligit OS.

You tried this part?
For Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003.
Manually install the latest controls:
Download the controls from:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/cab/x86/unicode/iuctl.cab
Save them to your desktop. Extract the .cab file following the steps
below:
1. Go to the desktop and right click the iuctl.cab file.
2. Click "Open".
3. Select all the files listed.
4. Right click on them and click "Extract."
5. Point to a known location (like the desktop) and click "OK."
6. Go to the location you selected and right click the iuctl.inf file.
5. Click "Install."

If the above fails, reboot.
Delete the downloaded file.
Go to Internet Options in the Control Panel:
Delete Cookies
Delete Files (check box "Delete all offline content")
Clear History
Download again and repeat procedure.

If the above fails, hit the secured site directly:

Yes I tried to download it from the manual site but got
got the "site not found" error. Additionally, I tried your
other other suggestions but also failed by getting "server
may be down" error. What should I do now?

I just successfully tried both sites so try again.
Perhaps there was a problem at the time you tried.

I have tried several times at both sites with out
success. Additionally, I found that by turning off my
firewall (TrendMicro) I can get the origional Windows
update without any notice. I have sence tried this site
via Windows tools and reached the same site. I do not
know if this is a cookie on my computer or really the
site. Please help!!

If you are getting to the sites with your firewall off, there is a
setting wrong in the firewall.
The firewall is blocking the Windows Update site.

Also be very cautious about no firewall...it only takes seconds...

I can get to the sites with& without the firewall, however,
I cannot get a download from the download site. I keep
getting the 404 error message and the secure site only
gives a site error message. The sites I do get to seem to
be the old "download site" without offering me to update
the updatter tools.
