Running under Vista Home edition and there is an automatic update to install
Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (KB948465). The service pack installation fails
to install and then Internet exporere v8 is no longer functional. I restored
the computer to a point before the installation and all's well.
Do I need this servicepack update and if so, how do I correct the internet
explorere issue. I followed the BITS recommendations and that did not correct
the situation.
Please advise

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you attempted to install SP2?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Error message when you try to install Windows Vista Service Pack 2 or
Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2: "An internal error occurred while
installing the service pack":
