Yesterday I installed a couple new updates from Miscrosoft - the authenticity
check (which I have postponed because it sound like it sould cause ptoential
screwups in my system) and another update, not sure what. After downloading
tried to check email and got kicked out with an error message that I sent to
Miscrosoft. Today I can get into OE, but I cannot see the body of my
messages. I see ony the From, To and Subject. Also, I can open attachments.
Another note, my SpySweeper ran last night with no problems. I have Windows
XP Professional and have checked that I have all the latest updates from MS.
Please help me figure out how I can see my emails again!!! Thanks!

- PA Bear - did as you said, but to no avail. I did figure out a way to see
my messages, though. I double click on athcmd:download in the bottom left
corner of OE, then it creates an attachment of the wording that I can access
through Internet Explorer - the address is C:\Documents and Settings. A very
long and roundabout way, but at least I can see them now. Do you think this
is a virus? I ran SpySweeper, Spybot, CW Shredder and Windows Live OneCare
with no problems.

On the Menu select Tools
Then select: Options
Then select: Read
Then select: Fonts
Change the default encoding setting to Western European (ISO)
Finally in Internet Explorer delete the Temporary Internet Files including all offline
content.

Did what you suggested with no change. Thank you for the suggestion. OE is
running terribly slow - I keep thinking there must be a bug somewhere, but
can't find anything when I scan. Any other suggestions??

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity.

1. First, disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It
provides no additional protection, it might be the cause of the problems,
and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<paste>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
</paste>
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2002111812533106

2a. Now try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File >
Identities > Add new identity).

2b. Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2)
import messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete
the old one (File > Identities > Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Hi,

I am picking up on this thread becasue I am receivbing the same message on OE 6

""
Message has not been downloaded
Outlook Express has not yet downloaded this message.

To download the message:

Press Space. ""

This is only happening on some of the messages, and in all cases these are messages whihc I previously had received OK and was able to read.

I suspect that something is corrupt, as I have taken the .dbx file and put it on another machines with OE6, and have received the same errors. I have also tried changing identities, but no success.

Is there anyway of accessing or recovering these emails.

Many thanks

Harry
