I am obliged to keep one computer running Win98SE. As MS is
stopping support for 98SE, I reviewed all of the updates that
are necessary for the computer and downloaded the files that
will allow me to recreate the installed software. That is...,
all except files that would install IE6 SP1 and DirectX 9.0b
End-User. I can only obtain those updates via Windows Update.

Are files available for IE6SP1 and DirectX 9.0b End-user that,
when executed, will update a Win98SE computer exactly as it
is now possible via Windows Update on the web?

You can download the necessary files to install Internet Explorer 6 SP1
from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp

DirectX 9.0b

Lucy,

Thank you. That answers the question for DirectX 9.0b, but it is NOT
the answer I was seeking for IE6 SP1. What you have provided for IE6
SP1 is only a stub file that calls in additional files over the internet.
It is 479K, and the reference you cite says that the size of the
downloads can vary between 11 and 75 MB.

How can I obtain the whole thing, as if I didn't have an internet
connection?

Lucy is right. Download the stub file and then see knowledgebase article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;257249
Download-Only Setup of Internet Explorer on Windows 2000 and Windows XP

This technique works in Win9x also. Make the necessary adjustments for IE6
and be very careful that you get the spacing and quotes exactly right. I
have done this many times. After you are done you can archive the files
from the folder that they downloaded to. This will get you almost all the
files especially if you check all the operating systems. To the get
languages also, you would need to use this folder to install IE6 on a system
and do a custom install with every box checked. This will cause the
installer to download the missing language files. Then archive the install
folder after that.

Good luck with it.

Thank you. That KB257249 is not easy to follow, however. They don't seem to
understand how the double sets of double quotes are used or not used. I finally
found what worked and I have the files now. I don't understand the use of the
file name ie6wzd.exe as that file name never shows up anywhere but in the
command line of the Run command.

To help anyone else who may be following this thread, I first downloaded the
stub file, iesetup.exe. I then put it into a new D:\IE6 directory. Then I
ran this syntax in the run command, complete with the quotes on both ends:

"D:\IE6\ie6setup.exe" /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"

And the 12MB of files were written into D:\Windows Update Setup Files\.

I tried 9 other iterations before I found this one that worked. Whew.
