Hi All,

Well, I did it again. Running Win Me, I was at a trusted
web site that suggested downloading the Sun Java VM, so I
figured this is a good time to do what will eventually be
required. Then I had a thought (big mistake). I
attempted to remove the components of the MS virtual
machine. I semingly downloaded Sun's java (no error
messages, but now when I go to sites requiring aJava VM, I
get no appelet starting and no error message. Can anyone
help? I'm counting on you Jupiter. :-).
Thanks

Bob,

First uninstall Sun Java via Control Panel. Then go to
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files. Right click on the Sun Java Active
X Java Runtime Environment package(s) and click Remove.
Reboot your system.

Go here and download ( do not install yet ) msjavwu.exe:
http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/VM.htm

Close your browser. Make sure you have temporarily disabled any 3rd
party software that can interfere with the download or installation
(i.e. antivirus, firewall, pop-up stoppers, spy | malware apps, etc ).

Go offline and install the MSJVM package. Reboot.
Hopefully , this will at least give you your java functionality back.
Can't guarantee anything, but it *should* work.
DO NOT DELETE any java files in the future concerning MSJVM.
If you want to install the Sun package, they will run side-by-side
without any repercussions.

Which Sun package did you install ? I'd stay away from any beta ones.

Bob,

Did you follow these steps to remove MS's java;

  1. From the Start menu, select Run.
  2. Enter the command
    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall
  3. Click Yes to the confirmation, then select Reboot.
  4. After the machine restarts, delete the following items:
    • the \%systemroot%\java folder
    • java.pnf from the \%systemroot%\inf folder
    • jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%systemroot%\system32 folder
    • The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkey
    • The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM registry subkey (to remove the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) options)

Microsoft Java is now removed. You can download Sun's newer JVM for Windows at http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html.
