On my desktop the version is 7.3.7600.16385. This machine is a Dell Inspiron
(commissioned in July 2009) with Windows 7 HP 32 (updated from Vista HP 32
recently), Intel and Office 2003 Professional. Properties show the file was
created, modified and accessed on 17 July 2009. This machine has never had
any update failures.
On the HP (Compaq V6508AU) laptop the version is 7.4.7600.226 - Vista HP 32
(commissioned in September 2007), AMD and Office 2003 Professional. Created
and accessed on 4 October 2009, but modified on 7 August 2009. This machine
has constant code 643 failures for Office updates in October, November and
December i.e. following the creation and accessed date.
Is the version on the laptop the cause of the 643 update errors? Why does
the desktop version predate the laptop?

Is the same security software present on both of the systems ?
FWIW, the Win7 system should also have the WUA updated to the latest
version, too. There's been a slight change to it's behavior so that All
Users can install updates, one can select a list of updates to hide with
a right click instead of having to select individual updates one at a
time, and there's a new setting for " Show me detailed notifications
when new Microsoft software is available ".

Same security software Microsoft Security Essentials, Ad-aware, and
Malwarebytes on both.
I don't understand why the desktop version of WUA is outdated either.
I've also posted the query to:
http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thread/12a0ccf1-4557-4b70-be83-c3588adb2511
and have have received some thoughts but no resolution. Its pretty useless
posting to that other unwieldy thread on the social forums regarding 646.
It is a strange one, but I have some solace seeing so many others are
getting the same error i.e. its not just something I am doing. I do find it
more than passing strange that the problems started with the October
updates, just after the latest release (7.4.7600.226) of WUA.
Anyway, I'm away from tomorrow until next week, maybe Santa will bring the
solution!
Best wishes

The free versions of AdAware and MBAM do not provide real time
protection so they can't be the cause of of the 7 system not having the
WUA updated.
Wouldn't it be ironic if MSE was the software preventing it's
installation ?
Anywho, enjoy your time off and have a Happy Holidaze !
