For the last week I have been trying to install a number of Office 2007
updates which are all failing with the above error code. I have run the
Windows Genuine Tests for both Windows and Office - the latter identified 2
missing ActiveX components which are now installed but the updates are still
failing.

My operating system is XP Pro SP2. I have Office 2007 and also have Access
2003 and Excel 2003 installed (which I need for supporting clients).

Any suggestions or do I have to wait for Office 2007 SP1?

<cmd_output OS="XPsp3">
E:\>set /a c = 0x664
1636
E:\>net helpmsg %c%

This patch package could not be opened. Contact the
application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows
Installer patch package.
</cmd_outuput>

Try searching with the decimal value implied by that code?

BTW you're more likely to find help from people who actually
have the product you are trying to update, since they
will have logs to compare with yours. Cross-posting
to an Office NG for convenience.

Good luck

This problem may occur when the temporary folder on the computer is encrypted.

By default, the Microsoft Self-Extractor program extracts the installation files for
the update package to the %temp% folder. The program then runs the update package's
Setup program from this folder.

If the %temp% folder has been encrypted, and if you signed on to the computer by
using a standard user account, the update package's Setup program cannot run.
Encryption may have been enabled on this folder by the user or by certain tools such
as the Microsoft Encrypting File System Assistant (EFS Assistant).
