Downloads Updates but Fails Installation?

Seems a lof of folk have variations on this problem but no real fixes
anywhere including MS Websites. The fix that does work is a re-install
but thats a bit OTT for a glitch like this. Very annoying though.

Windows XP Pro - originally SP1 updated to SP2 - Fully Legal activated
software.

Problem started with SP2 installation, I dont really fancy doing a
repair install if I can get away without it.

I have been chasing this bug for a while with zero success.

as follows

Windows Update appears to work normally, up till downlod and install.
The download looks to be working OK but the install fails with no
error message and no corresponding fault code in the log.

When digging deeper the actual download has not been downloaded to the
Windows/SoftwareDistribution folder so the installation always fails
as there is nothing to install.

Update Log Files show that the system thinks the download it has been
asked to get is already downloaded so it does not transfer any bytes
from the update server.

In other words it thinks it already has downloads ready to install
when actually this is not true then it tries to install an .exe it
does not have and gives "Installation Failed" message with no
connected error codes.

The only thing I can see in the log files is something wrong with the
SID token (WTF is that then?) but I have no idea how to fix it.

Have you tried to download the SP2 file directly, and install it from the saved folder?

You can just do an overlay of the operating system as opposed to a full
reinstall. This is how I fixed my problem a few days ago. I searched for
days high and low and I found nothing that helped me with the problem.

I wonder if Microsoft is even aware of this issue or not.

I had four updates needed for Windows Update itself and seemed to be having
just this problem. I found 3 of the four downloads had been completed
sucessfully and I was able to run the individual setups from
Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Downloads. These seem to work fine but I can't
find the fourth (KB892130, should anyone know where I might find it).

Yeah I did a direct download / save / install originally. I have made
a sllipstream disk to do a repair install if I really get hacked off
with it but its not really too serious to risk spending a week
re-installing this particular pooter which runs so much stuff its not
funny. Take me a month to get it back to this state so I am willing to
work around bugs for now.

Besides which it occurs to me that the slipstream disk I made will
have the same bug since it came from a flawed install in the first
place.

D'ya mean a repair install? - thought of that - don't want to try that
yet see reply to Unk.

They are aware - got an e mail months ago saying they were working on
it and pointing at the totally useless troubleshooters. I am not
entirely sure they understand the full extent though as most people
who have these probs seem to have variations so the prob is niether
consistant or critical enough.

It is supposed to dl into the Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Downloads
folder. Due to my update problems it did not work on mine so I got it
from the same folder on my laptop and it installed fine.

You can get round it anyway
