Connect to NT Workstation remotely

I want to connect to a windows NT Workstation that is not connected to
a server of any kind.

Is there any way with remote desktop (downloadable from Microsoft) to
connect securly over the internet with any other box with remote
desktop?

Currenty I am using PCAnywhere and am not satisfied wiht the a.) Modem
Response time,
lack of windows based security.

Any assistance, pointers, or guideance would be greatly appreciated.
