How do you specify the username and password on the new RPD client? Or
is there a way to bypass asking the username/password, basically have
it behave like to old client?

I doesn't seem to remember the userid/password even if you click on the
check mark. Thanks.

If your computer is part of the domain, you can't save the credentials.

When you are on the workgroup and check the "Save my password" check box on
the client UI the password is cached and you shouldn't be prompt for
password when connecting to the same server.
