I am trying to create a boot disk to be used with the 3COM's 3C509B network
card. This card is not listed under the Network Adapter Card list in the
Network Client Installation Startup Disk.
How can I configure the protocol.ini to work with the righ drivers?

Thanks for your help,
Renato

the 3com card is listed as a etherlink III card. I don't think it says
3c509b but it is the same thing. Your subject says 3c905 which is a pci
card. Yours should be an isa card. I have the same card 3c509 and it works
just fine with the network install routine. If you have a card that does
not work, edit the protocol.ini file and take out the ";" semi colons that
remark out the port= and the irq= lines. And set the port and irq numbers
to match the card's settings. The boot disk tries to detect the card and
sometime it does not detect it. Sometimes you have to use the ne2000
driver. Which will work with just about any card.

Here is how to fix it to use the 905's
Steps to make NT DOS Client Disks for the 3C905 adapter.

1. follow NT's steps to make the client diskettes and choose
the Etherlink III adapter from the list

2. then go in and edit the following sections
(ONLY CHANGE THE TWO LINES IN THE EXAMPLES SHOWN BELOW)

a. in the PROTOCOL.INI - there should be a section which reads
[ms$elnk3]
drivername=elnk3$

change elnk3$ to el90x$

i.e. [ms$elnk3]
drivername=el90x$

b. in the SYSTEM.INI file - there should be a section which reads
[network drivers]
netcard=elnk3.dos

change elnk3.dos to el90x.dos

i.e. [network drivers]
netcard=el90x.dos

3. then copy the el90x.dos file from the 3Com diskette (it's in
the \NDIS2\DOS directory on disk1 to the NT DOS Client
diskette (put the file in the \NET directory)
