I have NT 4.0 server on a presario 4528. The only thing that will not
work
is the Presario modem. Neither Compaq nor MS has NT drivers for any
presario
modem. My Hayes works, so does my USR Sportster.
Also, do not try to use a PCI network card, mine wouldn't work even
though
the card came with NT drivers.
I wiped WIN95 before installing NT, don't know if that matters.

The modem would not work as the modem drivers are proprietary. Also the modem
settings like the IRQ's and the COMport settings of a Compaq modem are stored in
the BIOS, and you will be surprised to know that the BIOS in some Compaq Presario
is stored on the 2 MB NON DOS partition on your HDD when your computer came with
Win95 pre installed.
The only way to get that back is run the Computer Reset Compaq CD-ROM that came
with the computer that you obviously might not want to do.
So shove out the Compaq modem and throw it as far as you can. I have 5 such
modems lying for my kids to play with when I become a father.
Best deal is get a Hayes 56K internal Modem Model 00-2974 from Comp USA. They are
selling it for $129 and get forms for $40+$20 mail in rebates from them.
Best deal available for the 56Flex and 56 V.90 standard. I had had already put
many hours trying to make the COmpaq Modem work.
Hope this helps

Yes, it is not only Win95 preinstalled. It also my old presario Win 3.1
preinstalled. I lost mt Bios access almost a year after formatting HDD and
installed new Win95.

This actually very stupid feature of Compaq. My reinstalltion CD do not
allow selective installation. It install all, most of them junks. As I don't
install junks, I lost that small partition and lost Bios access. However I
found out recently a few files from Compaq web site, that can access Bios
from drive A diskett boot.

Fortunately, now the newer (at least the 48xx series) do not store the BIOS
on the hd, it is in cmos just like everyone else.

If the Compaq computer in question is still supported, you can download the
BIOS software from the Compaq web site. They tend to be a pain in the a**
to work with, but aren't so bad once you know about the bios, and the fact
that they tend to use cable-select for IDE/EIDE control instead of
explicitly jumpering master and slave.
Thanks.
