hi,everyone?

is the ICS(Internet Connection Sharing) used by win98 and the NAT(Network
Address Translation) used by Windows XP?
and what about windows 2000?

They're two different animals. ICS requires NAT, but NAT doesn't require
ICS. What specifically are you trying to find out?

yes,I just tried the ICS on my broadband connection, but it failed, the ISP
told me they don't allow the sharing and blocked it.

but as I know about NAT which translates the address of the source
packets,so how can ISP detect that I am using NAT?

Buy a small router/firewall - see www.netgear.com - and stick it between
your DSL/cable modem and your hub/switch. Get rid of ICS. This device will
do NAT for you, log in using PPPOE if necessary, configure to a static or
dynamic address, etc ... and if they're watching for MAC addresses, you can
spoof that, too - they'll never know you have multiple machines on.

ICS sucks anyway. These devices are so cheap now I don't see the point of
not using them.

My connection is ethernet interface and assigned IP from ISP's DHCP,is that

Yes, that's fine - it will take a DHCP-assigned address and NAT it to its
own private range - it can also do DHCP for you on the inside (LAN).

Yes, you have to buy hardware to do this the way I have suggested. It
doesn't cost much. The ones I like are usually about $125. As I mentioned,
check out www.netgear.com and see what they have for firewall/router/gateway
devices.

I do not recommend using Linksys. I have had bad luck with those. Stick with
NetGear.

Most ISP's do not allow you to share your Internet connection. They do
not really worry about it for dial-up accounts as they are to slow for
anybody to share them, unless you have ISDN. If you have cable or xDSL
you may want to check your agreement. Most limit you to one computer
and if you violate this, they can terminate your service. Some will
allow you to have additional computers at an extra cost per month, they
will even provide you with a unique IP address for each. Other will
require you to upgrade from a home account to a business account if you
want more that one computer.

I have only two computers,I had better plug in and out the line between the
two computers to share the connection.because $125 is not cheap to me as I
live in China.
Thanks for your attention.

I'd suggest you start looking around anyway - you may be able to find
something cheaper - I'd be surprised if you couldn't, especially in China,
to be honest! These hardware devices are becoming very common.

There are various ways that they can get the idea that you are using
NAT. Most of which invloves monitoring your traffic. Noramally a
single person on a single computer is not going to 2,3, 15 different web
sites at the same time.

Of course the biggest give away is when you call in for technical
support and they start asking you questions and having you e-mail your
system's configuration. It gets a little obvious when they assign you
IP address 155.1.6.5 and your system configuration comes back with IP
addres 10.1.55.2.

There are also other ways.

I am interesting in details for other ways.
for what you metioned about the traffic,I don't think so because I have
only two computers, and the time I tried only the client computer is visiting
the web.
as to the second point , because my client is blocked at the most
beginning,so it seems not that way.

Ask the web browser what the IP address is of the maching it is running
on. Compare that to the IP address in the packet header. If they do
not match, something is either doing proxy or NAT.

You might solve this more economically by setting up 1 of your 2 PCs as a
proxy. All you need is some freeware proxy and firewall software. Your ISP
will only see the proxy.

For the proxy I would recommend:
http://www.jana-server.ocm.de/

For the firewall:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp
(just look for the free version)

Jana Server can be a bit tricky to set up, but is well worth the effort.

Thank you for the complement, as you will see in one of my other posts
to you, Windows is not my expertise.

I have no certificates in anything. However, as my co-workers will
confirm, I am certifiable :)

Is this a problem with setting the proxy up, or has your ISP blocked it?

I sure now ISP blocks it,ISP admited it.
in fact,I must run a client software provided by ISP to access Internet.so
it is easy for ISP to block any sharing.
do you have any interest or experience to crack the software?

Sorry. I would like to help but I have no experience in this area.

From what you are now saying (client software), the previously suggested
hardware router option may not work either.
