System : Windows NT Server SP4, TCP/IP only with WINS/DHCP.

When I boot the system (PDC). The following message appears in the event

viewer :

SRV_ANT_P is not a valid computer name.

When I try to start the workstation service manually the following error

comes up :

Couldn't start the Workstation service on \\SRV_ANT_P
Error 0002: The system cannot find the file specified.

Plus in event viewer :

The workstation service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

Event ID 7023, Source Service Control Manager.

Could someone help me please,

Thanks,

Werner.

Hello Werner,
Maybe following KB article helps.
Bye
Olaf.

Q197157 Workstation Service Does Not Start

When you start or reboot a computer that has two network adapters installed,
the Workstation service may not start and the following error messages may
appear in Event Viewer:

Event ID: 3870
Source: Workstation
Description: <computer name> is not a valid computer name.

Event ID: 7023
Source: Service Control Manager
Description: The Workstation service terminated with the following
error: A duplicate name exists on the network.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if both network adapters attempt to register the
same NetBIOS name with the Microsoft Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS).

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, disable the NetBEUI protocol that is bound to one of
the network adapters. To do this:

Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click
Network.
Click the Bindings tab, and then click All Adapters in the Show Bindings For
box.
Click the plus sign next to the second network adapter.
Click NetBEUI Protocol, and then click Disable.
Click Close, and then restart the computer.
MORE INFORMATION

For more information about NetBIOS names and WINS, see the following article

Thanks Olaf,

but... I found some articles on Technet myself and tried them. No solutions were
found. I get even messages about duplicate names!? And no computer on the
network has the same name.

When I install NetBeui the workstation service starts without a problem. When I
reinstall TCP/IP again I receive the same message/problem.

Thanks,

Werner.

Hello,
maybe you have a static mapping to the servername in your WINS database?
Remove it, and also all other mappings, which are related to it's name.
Bye
Olaf.
