I have a NT4.0 Server w/ ras installed configured to use
DHCP to assign the remote clients ip address. We I
connect from a Win98 Laptop I get the right IP address,
but the wrong subnet and cannot see anything on the
network. I am using WIN98 SE with a dial-up adapter.
Please help!!

Thanks

Chad

The subnet mask is a bit of a red herring. When the client connects there
is no way for it to get the subnet mask from the RAS server. (The client
gets its IP etc from the RAS server, not from DHCP). The subnet mask is
created based solely on the IP number received - 8 bits for class A, 16 bits
for class B etc.

The problem is more likely to be name resolution. Do you have WINS running
on the LAN? If not you probably need an LMHOSTS file so that the client can
access the domain master browser.

Have a look at John Buchan's site at

I do have wins running. Is the lmhost file similar to the
host file? Does it go on the ras server? What directory?

THanks

If you are running WINS you will not need LMHOSTS. (It was a file on the
client to allow it to find LAN services such as domain controller and master
browser. With WINS the client gets this info from the WINS server).

Are the clients getting the correct WINS address? Is the dialup
connection configured to use WINS? Can you ping the LAN machines by name?

The dialup is configured to "server assigned name server
addresses" I can't ping anything. When I do winipcfg I
get the proper ip address. How do I tell what wins
address it gets?

Thanks
