Hello
NT4 SP6a print server. A few hundred XP Pro clients.
Since NT4 doesn't have the drivers needed for XP, we
installed the drivers through the recommended method:
(Hopefully this info will be helpful to someone.)
Install the printers on the server, connect to the print
queue on the server from the XP client. You will
probably be able to print using the NT drivers at this
point, but the device settings, etc. will likely not be
correct. In order to correct this, go to the sharing tab
of the printer on the XP machine, check off the "Windows
XP or 2000" box, browse to the location of the XP
drivers. In many cases you will get an error and you'll
need to install the .inf file for the driver to the
Windows\Inf directory, then try again. This had worked
well for all of our printers until the most recent two -
HP LJ 4200, Xerox DC 440 Copier. I do all of the above
but when I check the "Windows XP or 2000" box, and
hit "apply" I get the error message "No suitable driver
can be found....." I've tried installing the printer
locally first, which doesn't work. Even though I can
print directly to the printer using the XP drivers, once
I try to update them on the server with the
aforementioned method, it fails. I've also tried using
the latest XP drivers from the respective Web Sites with
no luck. Ironically, there are native drivers for the
Xerox copier available in the XP OS which is even more
reason this should succeed.
Any ideas or solutions? Thanks much.

If the XP clients have native support (with EXACTLY the same driver name as
the NT4 driver name), you don't need to install the driver as additional
driver on the NT4 box.

But the most likely reason for the problem that you're seeing is that the
NT4 driver name is different from the XP driver name. Any tiny difference
(such as two spaces between the manufacturer name and the model number) will
cause the XP driver to be regarded as not suitable. You could edit the INF
that you're trying to install to change the model name to exactly match the
NT4 driver.
