HP NetServer LH3R
HP SureStore DLT 40i internal DLT tape drive
NT 4.0 SP 6.0a, Exchange 5.5
Veritas Backup Exec for Windows NT ver 7.3. w/latest patches

3 of the 7 Backup Exec services won't start: Backup Exec 7.x Agent Browser,
Backup Exec 7.x Device & Media service, and Backup Exec 7.x Job Engine.

When starting Backup Exec I get this message:
Physical volume library database - connection has been lost.
Check your network connection to the Backup Exec database server.
(The backup tape device and the Backup Exec software are on this same
machine)

When trying to start the Backup Exec 7.x server service I get this message:
Could no start the Backup Exec 7.x Server Service on \\server_name
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

A few days ago, after a reboot, I noticed the 4 stop errors below in event
viewer.

Event ID: 7009
Timeout (120000 milliseconds) waiting for service to connect.

Event ID: 7000
The Backup Exec 7.x Device & Media Service service failed to start due to
the following:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely
fashion.

Event ID: 7001
The Backup Exec 7.x Job Engine service depends on the Backup Exec 7.x Device
& Media Service service which failed to start because of the
following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely
fashion.

Event ID: 7001
The Backup Exec 7.x Server service depends on the Backup Exec 7.x Device &
Media Service service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely
fashion.

Event ID: 7001
The Backup Exec 7.x Agent Browser service depends on the Backup Exec 7.x Job
Engine service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start.

Anyone know what could be going on here and how to fix this? Thanks for any
help.

-Phil

Phil I think I would look at the account the service is using to log on. Has
it got sufficent permissions? Can you log in to the domain usin g that
account.

Just for the record, I resolved this be updating the ODBC drivers.

Find the subkey 'Backup Exec 7.x server service' (or similar), then examine the
values DependOnService and DependOnGroup. Maybe you'll find a clue there...

Happy holidays,

If you got this fixed, great!

If not, well, I just went through it for the 3rd time -- it's usually a
corrupt PVL.MDB file. You can replace it with the one from the install CD.

I'm sending a copy via email only because I'm not sure if you'll be checking
back on the group, and this is apparently a very common problem with BE.
