Hallo,

can "all" programs (like AutoCad) access 1GB under WIN NT 4.0?

Where is the limit?

Thanks in advance
Basedow

Not sure what you mean... But the theoritical limits in NT 4.0 are:
System drive can not be bigget than 7.8 GB unless you use some partitioning
program...
All other drives must be under 16 Exabytes (which is HUGH...)
Ive seen programs activly using 4GB files on an NTFS partiton...

Hope that helps... Matt

The limit is usually set in hardware by what limitations are implemented by
the memory controllers (and also by the number of DIMM/SIMM slots
available). I've used systems with 16GB of RAM on NT. Usually these
systems will run the "Enterprise Edition" of NT as this allows for a
*virtual* address space of 3GB per process which is useful for programs like
SQL that can really use the extra virtual address space.
So, to answer your question, all programs on the system will be able to
utilize the extra RAM *if* they request that much virtual storage. Use
task-manager and view the amount of VM used by AutoCAD during typical use.

I guess you mean raw RAM memory.

Well, according to Micro$oft, NTWS can use up to 2GB by process.
NT ENTERPRISE SERVER can access 3 Gb (up to 4 (32 bit limit) total system
(1 Gb kernel)) under Intel and not sure under DECAlpha, but certainly
more. This is RAM or virtual RAM

Disk limit (data drives, no boot) is around Exabites (10E9 Mb)

All programs running under NT MUST go through the Virtual Memory Manager
(VMM) when a request is made to access RAM (physical or virtual), thus if a
program cannot "see" for eg more than 32 Mb RAM it doesn't matter. The VMM
will move the data in and out of the visible '32Mb' RAM range to make it
accessible to the program, that's why you get Soft and Hard page faults (as
well as for 50 million other reasons) but hey .. who's counting ...
