WINDOWS XP START UP PROBLEM

I am running Windows XO Home Edition on my PC. When I boot up the computer I
get and NTFS system file message and then the computer does disk check of my
hard drive. This just recently started. What is causing this and how do I
fix it. My computer won't accept the original Windows XP software because of
all the updates that Microsoft has issued since I bought the computer 3 years
ago.
