I recently started to work for a company that uses routable ip address
internally. I asked them who they purchased them from and they said
they were used from a time (middle 90's) when their it was run from a
contractor. However, they no longer use that contractor and they
placed a firewall/router inbetween them and the internet.

My question is: "Is it illegal to use these ip address even though
they did not pay for them?" or "if they were to get audited, would
there be any problems with this?"
