I have been trying to get this NT workstation on the network. However, I keep
getting the message that, "the domain controller for this domain cannot be
located." I have tried everything short of recuilding the machine. I have
dropped the adapter, tried two different adapters, removed the protocols, renamed
the machine, re-entered the appropriate IP, WINS, DNS and gateway numebrs,
changed all of the cables, connectors and now have removed the machine from it's
original location to a port I know works. Still, I am awash on this one. I
can't even find information on the WWW for my problem.

If anyone has a tip or sees something I am overlooking, let me know. Thanks

Try using an LMHOSTS file with your PDC IP address and name in it.

172.16.0.1 MYPDCname #PRE #DOM:pdcdomainname

On the workstation make sure you have enable LMHOST lookup checked.
Go to a cmd prompt and do an nbtstat -r then nbtstat -rr then nbtstat -c
and see if your pdc shows up.

Also try removing that workstation from the domain, synchronize, then wait
for it to be removed (could take up to 50+ minutes) Re-Add the workstation
and synchronize.

Just a few thoughts....

I presume you can ping the PDC by name , net use to the PDC by name.

try adding an entry to LMHOSTS in c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc in the
format

ipaddress computername #DOM:domainname #PRE

ie

192.168.1.1 mypdc #DOM:doofus #PRE

save the file and do a nbstat -R to reload

just to see if something wacky is happening with WINS

Andy.

An nbtstat -R should be all that is required after adding the lmhosts entry
(capital R is important and make sure the file has no extension). I generally
don't use #PRE's, but it can't hurt :)
