Do you also have an A record (host) record for the mail server?
Can you ping the mail server by IP address?
What error message do you get when you try to ping it by name?

That should really be unnecessary for handling e-mail, though. What you
need to get mail is essentially:
1) Your DNS registered with the InterNIC (or your country NIC).
2) A Host record (A record) for the mail server.
3) An MX record for the domain that points to the host server.
4) The E-Mail server configured to accept e-mail for the domain.
