I am an administator for a DFS structure on windows 2003 active
directoy domain. The DFS in question is a domain based root with
multiple replicas. I have ha no other reported problems but am at a
standstill with our software distribution group over an issue with a
package to push out XP Sp2.

The path for the files was \\domain.com\SH\MSI\WINDOWSXP\i386\update

Running update.exe works fine. Tring to run the msi package from the
Wise installer fails and hangs.

Even the package will succeed if we change the source files location
to \\domain.com\SH\MSI\XP\i386\update

A trace run during the failed attempt showed a path
\\domain.com\SH\MSI\WINDOWS~\i386\update

A server UNC path will not fail. It succeeds with
\\ServerName\SH\MSI\WINDOWSXP\i386\update

The problem occurs specifically when using the installer code, with
the LFN on DFS only.

In my internet searches and the MS Knowledgebase I could find nothing
anywhere to indicate a change I could make to DFS to alleviate this
problem. I have told the packagers to modify the path length but I am
getting kickback that my diagnosis makes no sense. They do not want to
expend the cycles I guess.

I have heard from one experienced engineer that the Wise installer has
known problems with DFS and LFNs, but I can find no documentation to
back this up.

I do not have a lot of SMS or Wise installer knowledge, so I do not
know were to go next with this.
