can't play cd's

I'm using Win98 and Media Player 7.1

I can't get Media Player, or any of my players
(Real, Winamp) to play audio cd's - none of the players
start automatically or recognise that a cd has been
inserted, but when I explore to the drive through the
players the tracks are found - just won't play.

Somebody pointed out that I may have a hardware problem. I
found a problem with my primary ide controller and fixed
that, but I still can't play cd's - shop bought or cdr's.

Media Player gives error code:
"Error ID = 0x80040265, Remedy ID = 0x00000000
If the file you are playing is included in this table,
then it may have been encoded using a codec that is not
supported by Windows Media Player."

I don't know what to do - everything seems to be set up to
play cd's

Any help/advice much appreciated - I just want
to listen to some music! :)

Many thanks in advance
Dan
